THIS CAR IS NOT CURRENTLY LOCATED AT FANTASY JUNCTION, BUT CAN BE VIEWED AT OUR SHOWROOM BY APPOINTMENT. 1972 Mercedes 350SL s/n 10704310008432 Light Green Metallic with Green Interior The R107 generation of Mercedes SL was introduced for 1972 to replace the venerable `pagoda` cars epitomized by the 280SL. In line with the movement towards safety and environmental responsibility, the new generation of cars was comprehensively reengineered. Gone was the sometimes treacherous swing axle rear suspension of the old car, to be replaced by more predictable trailing arms, but the Mercedes values of quality and durability remained. The 350SL featured a fuel-injected V8, however, this engine could not meet American emissions requirements. The US model was the 450SL, which despite its 1 litre greater displacement, made approximately the same power as the European 350, thanks to its lower compression ratio and the fitment of early smog equipment. Moreover, 450`s also featured large `impact bumpers` to meet American safety laws, as well as automatic transmissions and electric windows to meet American public preferences. The 350, with its smaller much more attractive bumpers, lighter weight, available manual transmission, and higher compression engine, is a very different car to drive than the 450, and certainly appeals to the enthusiast. Fortunately, this car is now smog exempt in California, so the new owner can enjoy the benefits of the European engine without having to worry about passing smog. This particular 350SL was imported early in its life, and aside from being fitted with American headlamps, was spared the molestation associated with the federalization process. It is an extremely rare 4-speed manual equipped car and it has been well looked after, with about 118,000 miles from new. It comes with records since 1996, showing receipts for many small items, indicating a conscientious owner. It had a new clutch fitted about 6000 miles ago, and has also had a new battery and new tires. More recently $1600 was spent on brake work to include new rear soft lines, rotors, pads, and caliper seals. It comes with tools, both tops, top carrier, tonneau cover, owner`s manual, and the original steel wheels with color-coded hubcaps. The car is cosmetically extremely nice, with very nice paint showing only a few chips that have been touched up. The car was in a fender bender in the late 1990`s, so the left fender and hood have been repainted to excellent standards. There is one small area of bubbling on the front left A pillar. The chrome and rubber are very nice throughout, and the lights, lenses, and glass are excellent. The car is currently sitting on a set of chromed alloy wheels, which are in very nice condition. The interior is in time-warp condition and done in a lovely shade of dark green that is very attractive. There is one small crack on the dashboard, but it is otherwise excellent. The seats show almost no wear anywhere, and all gauges, switches, and the center console are excellent as well. The door panels are very nice, as are the carpets, and the car even has back seats, which US cars never had. There is a Blaupunkt CD player in the dashboard. This example has been cleverly fitted with a full cockpit tonneau cover. The trunk and engine compartment are unrestored but solid. The original jack is in the trunk, and while the engine is not fully detailed, everything is as it should be and there are no signs of anything amiss. This is a very unusual opportunity to acquire a very European example of these wonderfully robust and practical classics. This car has very low mileage, especially for one of these beautifully hewn cars from the era that contributed to Mercedes` reputation for indestructibility. The distinctly European features such as the engine, manual transmission, European bumpers, manual windows, and rear seats set this car apart from the masses, in addition to making this car a very difficult to repeat find. This is an affordable way to experience a truly different motoring experience, and the hardtop/convertible configuration means that this car can be enjoyed in many different ways, all year around.
