Blu Sera with Cream Interior
Produced in extremely limited numbers between 1960 and 1964, the Maserati 5000GT was an extravagant and exclusive halo model, in much the same way as the MC12 or Ferrari Enzo are today. They were coachbuilt cars, featuring sometimes outlandish styling from the most reputable coachbuilders and designers, including Allemano, Ghia, Frua, Michelotti, Bertone, and Touring of Milan. At twice the price of the 3500GT, the 5000GT was astronomically expensive, and only a select group of Maserati clients were able to acquire one of the 32 examples built. The car found many famous owners, each of which was required to specially order the car and place a substantial portion of the $14,000 price as a deposit. The owners included Aga Khan, the Shah of Iran, Giovanni Agnelli, Briggs Cunningham, Ferdinando Innocenti, and Mexico’s president Adolfo Lopez Mateos. The mechanical specification was jaw dropping for the period, with the quad-cam all-alloy V8 taken from 450S race car. The first three examples even retained the gear-driven camshafts and quad Weber carburetors, while subsequent examples had Lucas fuel-injection and more street-appropriate chain driven camshafts. Later examples such as this one were also equipped with disc brakes all round, an appropriate measure given that the car was reportedly good for 170mph. The interior was extremely luxurious, with bespoke touches throughout, jewel-like instruments, and materials of the highest quality.
This particular example is equipped with the rare ZF 5-speed transmission, and is the only example fitted at the factory with air conditioning, as confirmed by Maserati Historic Services in Modena, Italy. The car has known history from new, having been originally sold in Italy to a Mr. Brandini of Rome. It was originally finished in its current color scheme of blu sera (evening blue) with white leather interior, and comes with a copy of the Certificate of Origin. The car was dispatched to Caracas, Venezuela early in its life, where it was registered and driven for some time, and it later ended up dry storage for some years, still in Venezuela. It was discovered there by a Belgian diamond broker visiting in the early 1990’s. The car was returned to Europe where it received a full restoration, with mechanical work performed by highly regarded specialist Bill McGrath Maserati in the UK. The car was comprehensively restored to include both mechanical and cosmetic aspects.
There are extensive and detailed invoices included from Bill McGrath Maserati outlining the level of care and attention that went into the restoration. The total for the mechanical work (not including body, paint, or upholstery) was ₤85,473.08, and reflects the incredibly specialized nature of the car. At every turn, special measures were taken to ensure the quality and correctness of the restoration. Specialists in air-conditioning were employed to properly set up the unique system in the car, and Lucas specialists were employed to address the twin distributors, metering unit, and the rest of the fuel injection system. Lots of fabrication and investigative work was completed as well, and the exhaust system is a unique unit that was carefully fabricated following extensive research (including a trip to Italy). The major internal components of the engine replaced, in addition to the completion of a great deal of other mechanical work encompassing every major mechanical system of the car.
Currently, the car is in very nice condition and has an awesome presence. The restoration is holding up well, though close scrutiny reveals imperfections consistent with a well-cared for restoration completed a few years ago. The paint job was a high quality job and remains nice, with only a few small blemishes on close inspection. The chrome is very good, with very light haze in a few places. The lamps are in very good shape, and the wheels are excellent.
The interior of this car is an extremely special place. The level of detailing and the quality of the materials is first-rate, with knurled accents as one might expect to find in a Vignale bodied car. The instruments are works of art in their own right and are large comprehensive units that incorporate most of the major functions into the two major instruments. The leather upholstery is in lovely shape, with a lovely light patina. The carpets are high quality wool, and the dashboard is excellent. The wood steering wheel has a crack in the rim. The driving position is very commanding, and the visibility is excellent, thanks to the large glass area and very cool wraparound rear window. Even the dome lights work.
The trunk is equally posh, and is upholstered in the same dark blue wool as the interior (with contrasting cream colored leather edging). The engine compartment is very exotic in appearance, with massive air conditioning compressor, twin distributors, twin plug ignition, and Lucas fuel injection metering unit and plumbing. The sump and valve covers are even made of magnesium. The light green paint on the valve covers is correct, and identifies this is a five liter engine. Its shade was carefully recreated using scrapings of the original paint. The engine compartment is extremely correct, detailed, and very clean. The factory yellow paint markings have even been reproduced.
This is an extremely unique opportunity to acquire a superb example of a legendary car. Impossibly exotic and expensive when new, and purchased by some of the most powerful people in the world, these cars have always had a certain mystique to them. With only thirty-two examples built, the new owner will certainly be in exclusive company, while the level of work that this car has received ensures that the car will be ready for the new owner will be able enjoy the car as well. It is very complete, with spare Borrani wire wheel, reproduction of the original use and maintenance manual, and extensive invoices from the restoration.
