The legendary Carrera RS is widely regarded to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest roadgoing Porsche ever built. Compared to the standard 911, the cars featured larger more powerful engines, flared rear wheel arches to accommodate wider wheels, numerous deletions and alterations to reduce weight, improved suspension, and a few cosmetic alterations, which would become the car’s trademark. With its distinctive contrasting striping and wheels and the simple and functional ‘burzel’ or ducktail, the styling of the RS is iconic. With just 1580 examples built, the cars are in high demand and are accordingly valuable.

Consequently, replicas built using a variety of 911’s (and even 912’s) as bases are popular, particularly since it is relatively easy to achieve the look of the RS. However, most replicas resemble RS’s only visually, and high quality examples that faithfully reproduce the details of the original RS are unusual. This particular car is one such example, and was built with consummate attention to detail to accurately recreate both the look and the feel of a genuine RS. It was commissioned and overseen by a prominent Porsche racing driver and team owner, with many victories to his name including victories at Sebring and Daytona.

Based on a 1973 911 T, this car was built in 2006 and the specification includes numerous correct details. The car was stripped to the tub and fitted with correct and very rare steel RS rear flares. The engine is a 2.7 liter unit with mechanical fuel injection, and was built to RS specifications, right down to the red fan shroud. The wheels are correctly dimensioned 15” X 7” and 8” items, with a lovely frosted finish and color crests. The car replicates the lightweight RS look with fiberglass bumpers front and rear, and no deco strips under the doors. The interior also replicates the lightweight RS specification, with the correct seats sourced from Germany, correct carpeting and rubber floor mats, and lightweight door panels. The car has upgraded brakes and suspension from a 911SC, Bilstein shock absorbers, as well as stainless steel brake lines, SSI stainless steel heat exchangers, and adjustable sway bars. The car also has adjustable spring plates.

The car is in excellent cosmetic condition. The body is solid and straight, with very good panel fit and no visible rust. The paint was executed to high standards and remains in very nice condition. The weatherstripping was renewed during the restoration and is in nice shape, and the metal trim is in good shape, with light patina only. The car has the correct rectangular side mirror. The car has European front and rear turn signal lenses, and European H4 headlamps, all of which are in excellent order. The glass is also in excellent shape.

The interior is also extremely nice. The dashboard is in excellent shape with no cracking, fading, or warping, and the seats are excellent. The carpets and rubber floor coverings are also excellent, and a quality roll bar has been added as well. The instruments and switches are in fine shape, and the lightweight door panels and headliner are excellent. The car is fitted with a period Blaupunkt radio. The paint code plate is stamped 114, the correct code for signal yellow.

The engine and front compartment are both extraordinarily clean and very nicely detailed. The engine compartment has a very fresh appearance, with extremely clean and correctly finished components. The car has had the cadmium plating renewed and even has the correct RS decal fitted to the fan housing. The inner fenders and bulkhead are very clean as well. The trunk is similarly nice, and the car is equipped with full carpeting and spare. The car retains its twin batteries, and the inner fenders and trunk floor are outstanding. The car comes with jack, compressor, and tool roll with some tools.

Following the body restoration, the underside of the car was comprehensively treated with undercoating to protect the floors. The suspension, brakes, and powertrain are all extremely clean, and the impression of the underside is excellent.

The car drives superbly. It has an outstanding coherent feel, with well set up fuel injection and strong engine. The engine revs well and the gearbox is very good, with good linkage and synchromeshes. The brakes are powerful and work properly, and the ride quality is very good, as torsion bar suspended 911’s go.

This is a superb opportunity to acquire a thoughtfully executed RS replica, which was capably and knowledgeably finished to excellent standards. The level of detailing of the car is impressive, and it is in outstanding mechanical and cosmetic condition. The cost of duplicating this car would be quite high, and another important consideration is the rarity and near impossibility of acquiring many of the parts, which separates this car from lesser RS replicas.
