Description

1955 Ford Thunderbird
s/n P5FH251907
Raven Black with Red and White Interior

Intended to compete with Chevrolet’s recently introduced Corvette, the Ford Thunderbird was a two seat convertible with V8 power and quintessentially American 1950s styling. Unlike the Corvette, however, the Thunderbird was billed as a personal luxury car rather than a sports car and this approach ultimately proved much more popular with the American public. While the first Corvette had a 6 cylinder engine, side curtains, and minimal chrome which limited its market appeal a kept sales low in its first two or three production years, the Thunderbird was much more closely aligned with contemporary American tastes and sold very well. The car sold so well in its first production year, 1955, that it received minimal changes for 1956 and fairly light changes for 1957 as well.

This iconic 1950s automobile appears to benefit from a previous body-off restoration done professionally and to exacting standards. The odometer shows just over 56,300 miles, and it is equipped with 292 cu. in. OHV V-8 engine, three-speed Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission, coil spring front suspension with tube shocks and stabilizer bar, composite axle with leaf springs and double-acting shock rear suspension and four-wheel drum brake. Power windows and a modern aftermarket stereo system have been nicely installed on the Ford. It retains the correct, original Thunderbird hubcaps, wide whitewall tires, factory original top irons, and fender skirts, and it has the engine dress up kit and is a fit running example that shows well overall.
