Description

1956 Arnolt Bristol Bolide Roadster
s/n 404/X/3027
Red with Dark Red Stripe and Red Leather with Black Accents

The Arnolt Bristol was the result of American, Italian, and English collaboration. Mr. Arnolt was an eccentric American enthusiast, industrialist and businessman who, through his MG distributorship, struck a deal with Italian coachbuilder Bertone to build 200 special bodies for the MG TD chassis, creating the MG Arnolt. Half way through the run, MG stopped building the TD and to make good on his deal with Bertone, Mr. Arnolt sought a different chassis on which to put Bertone bodies. Eventually, he agreed with Bristol to use a shortened 404 chassis along with the ex-BMW Bristol inline-6, and a very swoopy and all new open body to create the Arnolt Bristol. Available in both stripped Bolide and more equipped Deluxe versions, the Arnolt Bristol was well-received, and met with much club success in SCCA venues. Arnolt Bristols raced extensively throughout the late 1950`s and early 60`s with considerable success, including a 1st, 2nd and 4th in class at the 12 hours of Sebring.

As cars that underwent final assembly in the United States, it was not unusual for examples to be fitted with American powerplants in period. This particular car is fitted with an eight cylinder engine and gearbox from a Corvette, and is noted as such in the Arnolt Bristol Register. The engine was likely fitted some time during the 1970`s, and all parts are period correct to the early 60`s. The engine was placed properly to improve weight distribution and handling. The car was previously part of the Gene Ponder collection and bears his famous red and black interior scheme, which was fitted during the restoration. The restoration itself is extremely fresh, with only a few miles since its completion.

The exterior features nice red paintwork with a subtle and tasteful dark red center stripe. The paint job is high quality, and features no significant wear or damage, while the panels are straight and fit properly. The minimal amounts of chrome trim are excellent, as are the lamps and lenses. The wheels are sparkling and fully chromed.

The interior is tidy and demonstrates the thoughtfulness of the conversion. The dashboard employs a full complement of Corvette instruments, including the evocative seashell shaped speedometer. They were seamlessly incorporated into the dashboard and look as though they were meant to be there. The center console trim and shifter surround has also been lifted from a late 1950`s Corvette, including the shifter, gear pattern placard, and ashtray. The upholstery is done in Mr. Ponder`s trademark color scheme, and the materials are of high quality, with hard wearing square weave carpet and soft leather.

The engine compartment is very clean and reflects the tidiness of the conversion. The engine has been placed low and far back in the chassis to lower the center of gravity and improve weight distribution, while an electric fan has been fitted to keep the engine cool in all conditions. The engine itself is reported to have been rebuilt at considerable expense during the restoration. The engine compartment is extremely clean throughout and very attractive. The trunk is also quite clean, with a fully restored spare wheel and tire.

This is an unusual opportunity to acquire a very attractive example of this stylish and very rare car. One of just 142 Arnolt Bristols built, this car is extremely unique, and is made even more so by its powerplant. The engine is quite powerful and makes unmistakable V8 noise, which makes this car a pleasure. As any car of this vintage would be, this car is eligible for many of the world`s premier vintage events and in touring events, the reliability of the American engine would certainly be a boon. It is fitted with a nicely made full tonneau cover in tan, which further enhances its usability.
