Description
Epitomizing the spirit of the American Specials, Max Balchowsky’s Ol’ Yallers are famous for their underdog victories over thoroughbred sportscars, despite having been made from just about anything that was available at the time. There were nine built during the 50’s and early 60’s, with each representing significant advances over the preceding example. Though they employed components from Buicks, Pontiacs, Jaguars, and Morris Minors, Balchowsky’s cars were always throughly and thoughtfully engineered, and as a result, the cars were able to beat Ferraris and Maseratis, including a 450S piloted by Caroll Shelby. This particular was the eighth built, and is certainly among the most aesthetically pleasing of them.
The car was restored in the 1990’s and the restoration was supervised by Max Balchowsky. It was subsequently raced with much success, most recently at the Monterey Historics in 2005. The car proved to be well-sorted and fun, in addition to being very competitive. The car remains event ready and is unique in every sense of the word.
