Description

1967 Ferrari 330 GTS
s/n 9791, Engine no. 9791
Gold with Blue Leather Interior

Unveiled in 1966 at the Geneva Auto Show, the Ferrari 330 GTC was a beautifully composed design offering a lithe, new body design and state of the art performance technology. The GTS debuted shortly thereafter at the Paris Motor Show making the already impressive GTC an even more dynamic sports car in the open configuration. Both cars were immediately celebrated as among the most refined road machines Ferrari had ever produced, offering driving characteristics, composure, and performance substantially ahead of contemporary sports cars. The V12 engine was part of the ongoing development of the impressive Colombo derived series, with wider bore spacing, displacing 4.0 liters, and generating 300hp. A torque tube connected the engine to the rear-mounted transaxle, optimizing weight distribution and improving handling. Both the 330 GTC and GTS utilized Girling ventilated disc brakes at all four corners, independent front and rear suspension, and a 5-speed rear mounted transaxle, resulting in exceptionally good road holding, fantastic acceleration, and reliable road use, even in daily traffic.

The elegant body design was highly refined from earlier show car efforts and featured sweeping glass, excellent visibility and comfort amenities including air conditioning and electric windows. Becker or Blaupunkt radios were optional, as were wire wheels. 598 330 GTCs were constructed between 1966 and 1968, but it would ultimately be the GTS that would become the most sought after of this remarkable series. With the roof removed and the structure fortified, the GTS was a delightful road car in spider configuration. The delicately trailing rear body lines were the perfect shapes to inspire the open configuration, gently blended at the rear but retaining perfectly balanced proportions. With a mere 100 examples built, the 330 GTS continues to be selected by the most astute collectors seeking a rare and important Ferrari that can be driven with ease and enjoyment. Traits designed and built into these cars are still greatly favored by top-tier collectors who enjoy using their cars in events as well as exhibiting them at premier concours shows.

This meticulously restored matching-numbers 330 GTS has a well-documented history supported by a Ferrari Classiche Red Book, Marcel Massini report, and documentation from various sources citing the build, delivery, and records of previous ownership. According to corroborating records from various and numerous sources, production for chassis number 9791 was completed March 4, 1967. It is recognized as the 28th car of 100 originally constructed. Originally finished in Grigio Fumo over Pelle Blue hides, chassis 9791 was dispatched to the North American market via Luigi Chinetti Motors, Greenwich, CT. In 1980 the car was offered for sale still retaining much of the original finishes, then boasting just 20,000 miles. Between 1988-1993 the car was listed in the Ferrari Owners Club of America including an entry in the Rosso Rodeo, 1996. In 2001 the car was purchased by Reed Harmon who commissioned Norbert Hofer to restore the car. The 2003-2004 restoration included paint applied by Rick Fitzgerald, with the interior reupholstered and a new top installed by Tomas Auto Trim. In 2008 the car was consigned for sale at Fantasy Junction where it was sold to a previous owner.

In 2008 the car then showed approximately 49,500 miles when Ferrari expert Patrick Ottis performed a complete inspection and compression test, returning 180-185 across all twelve cylinders. From 2010-2013 the car was mechanically and cosmetically restored to a very high-level including a bare metal respray in period correct gold. After the restoration, this Ferrari went on to become a multiple show winner. In 2012, this beautiful GTS was certified and presented with a Ferrari Classiche Red Book, documenting the original engine and gearbox, and further validating the impressive condition of this low mile example. In July 2021 a new battery was installed along with a new and correct Lucas alternator.

Today this exceptional Ferrari 330 GTS offers not only a stunning presentation and correct restoration, it also retains the original engine, original gearbox, and beautifully crafted Pininfarina coachwork. The metallic gold finish has been smoothly applied showing a deep luster throughout the body, with exceptional finish on both the exterior and inner body panel surfaces. The metallic paint has been applied with the correct density of metal flake which is critical to the color and tone of these period finishes. There are no blemishes to detract from the car’s captivating presence. The panel gaps are excellent throughout with tight closures from the doors, hood, and trunk. The chrome is exquisite with excellent finish on the bumpers and proper polish to the headlight rings, side mirror, window trims, and door handles. The beautifully finished aluminum grille, chrome grille surround, and sculpted center emblem are further examples of crafted excellence and restoration artistry. Glass and lighting are all in excellent condition throughout, with no evidence of delamination or distracting road chips on the windscreen. The soft top is easily raised and lowered and fits properly to the windshield header and can be smoothly stowed under the top boot. The correctly dated “Route Borrani” wire wheels are properly polished and virtually unmarked around the perimeter and inner rims, presenting with gleaming spokes, polished luster to the aluminum finish, and stunning chrome-plated triple ear knock offs. All four wheels are outfitted with period correct Michelin XWX tires, which contribute to the authentic stance and performance appearance of this GTS. The trunk houses a matching Borrani spare wheel and Michelin spare tire. Even the correctly angled and properly extended quad ANSA exhaust tips accurately represent the factory specifications while delightfully finishing the distinctively tailored rear profile of this beautiful GTS.

The interior offers a rare combination of elegance and sporting presence enhanced by superb finishes, materials, and meticulous attention to detail that continue to exhibit at a very high level since the reupholstery work was completed. The deep blue leather seats are perfectly padded, with correctly trimmed piping and pleats, showing just the right amount of sheen to the leather, softened now from mild enjoyment and modest use. The fit and finish on the inner door panels, center console, top boot and the top of the dashboard are exemplary, contributing to a very cohesive interior, accented by warm wood tones on the dashboard. The iconic yellow emblem centerpiece flanked by the spoked aluminum and wooden steering wheel offer the perfect tactile expression for leather gloved driving. The gorgeous high contrasting instruments are beautifully finished with excellent color and luster, completing the ideal and now iconic picture of Italian Sportscar motoring, perched behind the powerful V12 engine. Throughout the interior, delightful emblems, trim, and detailing come together in exceptional harmony. The driver’s side door sill edge and one minor area of the driver’s side grab bar show some areas of use, but otherwise the interior is excellent including the correct low pile carpeting and interior kick panels trimmed and fit to very high standards. The attention to detail that has gone into this restoration not only speaks well from an authenticity perspective, the colors and finishes are stunningly presented. The trunk compartment has been tastefully and correctly carpeted with matching correct side panels and authentic floor carpeting, housing a correct spare tire, nestled in the original spare tire tub.

Under the hood, the theme of excellence and expert detailing continues with the engine and engine compartment displaying correctly finished components and hardware. The multiple Weber carbureted engine is capped with the correct air cleaner and factory correct spin-nuts, correctly contoured hoses, proper fasteners, and correctly applied hardware per original Ferrari specifications. The engine area is detailed to a high level of finish, including the tufted diamond silver hood insulation pad, wire wound yellow lines, correctly plumbed hoses, and remarkably fine indication plates. The factory stamped engine numbers noted in the Classiche book are correct and original to the car. The underside of the car is clean and dry, displaying proper finishes, components, factory style exhaust and correct mufflers, correct suspension, and ventilated disc brakes. The condition of the chassis is excellent with no evidence of structural compromise or modifications. Excellent detailing and finish work performed on the chassis are in keeping with the superlative levels of excellence exhibited throughout the exterior. Ferrari Classiche photos document much of the suspension and brakes to a high level of detail further verifying their authentic origins. Having been tended to by experts and enthusiast-owners seeking the very best, one can truly appreciate the attention to detail and authenticity achieved in this beautifully finished GTS.
