General Overview

Having established themselves as leaders in racing venues throughout the world, Porsche was heavily campaigning their new 911 in a wide range of classifications during the 1960s. In 1968, the FIA reclassified the 911T to the same category as the 911S. With the lighter weight T equipped with a more powerful engine, rally prepped S models were dropped, and the T/R emerged for customers seeking a car for racing duties. The first homologation special based on the 911, the 911T/R was eligible for GT class, Group 3, finding favor with both professional and amateur drivers.

Sparse and lightweight, all T/Rs were shipped without sound deadening, lowered suspension, anti-surge fuel tanks, and twin fuel pumps. The most potent engine available was the 230 hp 906 equipped with titanium connecting rods, Carrera 6 pistons, a lightened flywheel, and stronger clutch. Steel bodied cars were mixed and matched with fiberglass features while the interiors were stripped to minimize weight. A range of options and other features were available per owner specifications, resulting in each of the mere 35 examples uniquely configured to owner/driver specification.

History of This Car

This 911T/R was purchased from the factory by Scania Vabis (Sweden) in 1967. Documented as a factory “R” with all factory racing equipment, the original twin-plug engine and factory gearbox still remain in the car today, as does the original floor pan, body shell, and lighter gauge steel fenders. In 1968 this car was entered in the 33rd Monte Carlo Rally. Considering 299 entrants battled the terrain and 163 cars crossed the finish line, this 911T/R finished well ahead of the pack at 12th place. Shortly thereafter, the car continued to race in Europe remarkably with no damage to the body, floor pan, or key structural components. In 1970, the car was upgraded to Group 4 specifications under sponsorship by Gulf Oil. During this upgrade for the 1971 racing season, the former narrow body fenders were removed, and the car was upgraded to wider RSR profile fenders allowing for more room to accommodate wider tires. The steel fenders, very likely prototype RSR fenders still under factory development, were made from light gauge steel and welded in place. During the upgrade to Group 4 specifications, a roll bar was also installed and the body refinished in blue and orange Gulf livery. In 1975, after concluding period race history, this 911T/R was put into storage where it remained until it was discovered in 1996 and recommissioned for road use.

Extensively researched and documented including a factory Kardex showing the matching number engine and T/R specifications, the car is also documented with prior ownership history dating back to the original purchase. In 2000, this car was awarded FIA papers and subsequently entered in several European vintage events. In addition to the historic reference materials, the original mechanic who serviced the car during the first five years of racing has also supplied written information on the history of this rare Porsche.

Restored under prior ownership in 2000, the engine was stripped down to the barrels and comprehensively rebuilt including chrome lined barrels, high compression pistons, new valve springs and tensioners, and center fed S profile camshafts with shimmed rockers. A set of new stainless-steel exchangers were installed, suspension upgraded, and all systems refurbished. Work performed in 2023 included timing adjustments, new fuel hoses, oil and filter change, brake fluid flush and brake bleed, resync for the carburetors, new throttle plate bushings, and new spark plugs.

Condition Overview

Today this impressive and historically important 911T/R presents beautifully, with excellent high gloss Gulf livery blue and orange paint. The hood and engine lid open and shut per factory standards displaying consistent dimensions and fit. The doors open and shut with excellent fit, and the body contours are remarkably fine owing to the long-term storage between 1975-1996. Of particular note, the wide lightweight steel fenders are smoothly contoured to the body lines giving the car fantastic stance and presence. The rubber trim, various plated parts, Sekurit side and rear branded glass, and unique R components all convey the exceptional history of this rare and desirable Porsche. The lighting, rear lenses, and side view mirror are also in excellent condition. The engine grille and 911T emblems are subtle nods to the modest production genesis, concealing the considerable power under the engine lid. Finished in Gulf livery, the colors reflect the historic sponsorship offered on this car during the last years of competitive participation in Group 4 events under Gulf sponsorship.

The black interior is all business, trimmed down to the bare essentials. The finishes are consistent with vintage race cars of this era including an array of black gauges, Momo steering wheel, black 5-speed gear shifter, and a dash-mounted rally timing unit. Other interior features include lightened inner door panels, black vinyl/cloth seats, and a multi-point roll bar. A pair of Sparco racing harnesses are fitted with anchor points mounted to the rear bulkhead and the rear seating deck is equipped with a fire bottle for the fire suppression system. The front storage compartment displays the correct anti-surge fuel tank fitted at the factory, a spare orange Fuchs wheel, and a shock tower brace.

The engine compartment features the powerful matching numbers 2.0-liter 906 twin-plug twin Weber carbureted engine which has been restored with correct finishes and original style components creating a very cohesive overall presentation with some allowances for safety and durability. The 5-speed gearbox is also matching per a copy of the Porsche Kardex supplied with this car.

The undercarriage is clean and solid, displaying the original floor pan and undamaged suspension mounting points, original matching gearbox, stainless-steel heat exchangers, clean engine and transaxle casings, and admirable originality especially considering the early years of racing use when first delivered. Preserved by dedicated enthusiasts during the 20+ years of protective storage, the ongoing preservation and care continues in the hands of Porsche enthusiasts inclusive of current ownership.

The car starts easily, revs responsively, and runs smoothly at idle with a raspy exhaust note when blipping the throttle. The car pulls cleanly through the rev range and comes on strong in the higher rev range. The motor is crisp, offering excellent power due to the unbeatable combination of twin-plug ignition, twin Weber carburetors, and special cams. The 5-speed transmission shifts smoothly and the brakes pull down straight without rotor runout on a solid, high pedal. The driving experience overall is a reminder of how great these early series 911 race-prepped cars truly were and continue to be more than half a century later.
