The 1935 Fords and the freshened 1936 version of the car included a host of improvements as Ford and Chevrolet fought for dominance in the automotive market during the 30s. The cars included considerable mechanical developments in the form of a longer wheelbase, revised suspension design that improved passenger comfort significantly, and was available in a variety of body styles. The Phaeton was one such variant, an elegant four door open car, which with 5555 examples built, was not only one of the rarer variants, but also one of the most glamorous. The cars carried on Ford’s historic flathead V8 that had been introduced in 1932. This engine was the first mass-produced V engine, and the first mass-produced 8-cylinder engine. This engine is considered to be the origin of the now legendary American V8 powerplant, and one of Ford’s great contributions to automobiles.

This particular car is an extremely nice 1936 example that has known history back to the late 1970’s, having been in the care of the same family from then until 1998. The car has an older restoration completed during that ownership period, which remains very fresh. Since the restoration, the car has been continuously maintained and freshened at considerable cost, with a thick file of invoices from the last ten years showing regular cosmetic and mechanical attention to include items such as new carpets, new top, restoration of the top frame, new tires, new motor mounts, instrument rebuilds as necessary, brake system rebuild, water pump rebuild, and attention to the steering gearbox and suspension. Various pieces of trim and weather stripping were also replaced, the fuel tank rebuilt, ignition wires and fuel pump replaced, front and rear bumpers replaced, and interior and exterior door handles re-plated. All four fenders and the rear body were also repainted and countless other jobs performed. Additionally, turn signals were added for safety, and the car was retrofitted with hydraulic brakes, which provides considerably improved stopping power over the earlier mechanical brakes.

As a result of this work, the car is in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition. The paintwork presents very nicely and was done to high standards. There are very few signs of age or wear, just some minor checking on the cowl, and a few very small marks about the car. The chrome is very good to excellent throughout, with no major pitting and all glass and lights are in excellent shape.

The interior is in very nice shape, with excellent upholstery and carpets. The instruments have some cosmetic patina but are presentable function properly. The owner had the radio rebuilt in recent years. The switches and controls are in fine shape as well.

The engine compartment is clean and correct in appearance, with period details such as generator, original type spark plug leads, and oil bath air filter. The engine was rebuilt as part of the restoration and runs very well, with good power and sound. It is well tuned and starts easily. The car tracks and handles well, and the hydraulic brakes provide more stopping confidence than the original mechanical items.

This is a high quality turnkey Phaeton that is ready to casually show or drive. It is finished in a great color combination and represents a pleasurable and evocative way to enjoy open air motoring with up to five friends. It has been continually maintained since its restoration and still presents as a fresh car with no significant needs. The upgraded brakes make it more usable in modern traffic, and the car is ready to be enjoyed. It comes with a thick file of records and documentation showing the care the car has received in recent years.
