This attractive Pennock bodied 135M represents a relatively straight and solid starting point for a thorough restoration. As an M model for `Modified`, this car is equipped with the desirable three carburetor package mounted to Delahye`s compaction derived power plant which saw action at Le Mans, among other important venues. With 110 hp, a top speed of 150 kph was possible, making the 135M among the faster road going cars available at the time. Production of the 135M began in 1938 and continued until 1951. It is believed that just 125 Pennock bodies were produced after WWII, most of which looked very similar to Chapron`s efforts at the time.
The body and chassis are relatively rust free and look to have been garage kept throughout the car`s life. There is no evidence above or below to suggest the car has ever suffered any major accidents or repairs. It would appear as though a new bonnet has been formed and fitted. While somewhat weathered, much of the chrome trim and handles remain. The difficult to replace dome Marchal headlights, and tail light lenses are all present. The top is complete with frame and canvas cover, which will likely prove helpful as a template. The windshield glass remains unbroken as do the side windows. The car sits on factory wire wheels, with very old State brand tires.
The interior is trimmed in extremely old red leather which is likely original. The front seats have been recovered at some point, but the original material exists below the recoverings. These sections, as well as those on the door panels, can be used as templates for the restoration. The original O.S. gauges remain, and are in good condition, but will require restoration. A 1950s era speedometer has been fitted to the center of the dash. The dash and door wood is in good condition, and could either be restored or used as templates for replacements.
The car has not run in many, many years, and is sold as a non-running example. We have verified that the matching numbers engine is free and turns over when in gear. While surely the carburetors and ignition components will require restoration, it is possible that the engine itself will not require disassembly. We cannot verify the condition of the brakes or driveline at this time. This example is largely complete. We are aware that the starter motor, front bumpers and battery are missing. There may be other, smaller items also missing.
The new owner could take this project in many different directions. This would be an ideal starting point for a show quality restoration, or, could be mechanically restored and left as-is cosmetically for a very charcterful event car. Alternatively, the body could be removed and the chassis reconfigured to emulate Delahaye`s competition automobiles of the era which are now extremely expensive and sought after pieces of motor history.
