Description

1959 Porsche 356A Super Cabriolet
s/n 151630, Engine no. P*746276* (fitted), P*83291* (included)
Silver with Red Leather

Porsche introduced the 'A' version of the 356 just as it was coming into its own as a sports car manufacturer. They had just completed their 10,000th car, and with racing efforts gaining momentum, it was clear that Porsche was a force to be reckoned with. The model line was diversified to include a variety of body styles and engines, of which the most expensive was the Super Cabriolet (besides the Carrera). In recent years, the A has appreciated considerably as enthusiasts become aware of its delightful blend of Porsche's iconic early styling and considerable mechanical updates learned from their dramatic racing successes of the 1950s. The 356A has an aesthetic purity that has made it among the most sought after early Porsches, while the traditional Porsche values of craftsmanship, engineering, and focus on driving are beautifully articulated in these cars.

This particular car is an absolutely unrepeatable example that represents a sort of holy grail for the 356 enthusiast. Not only is this a matching-numbers last year 356A 1600 Super Cabriolet, but it is more heavily optioned than any other 356 we have seen, ever. Furthermore, the car has been in the San Francisco Bay Area of California since new, remaining with the same family from new until 2009. Since then, the car has belonged to well-known collectors, spending most of that time on display at The Candy Store.

The car is still finished in its beautiful original color combination of silver with red leather interior. The care was ordered the car new at Gus Mozart Porsche (now Carlsen) in Palo Alto, California. Starting with the Super Cabriolet, he then specified just about every option, including correctly date coded Rudge wheels, flat Nardi steering wheel, Marchal headlamps, headrests, full leather interior (including door panels), and period correct restored Becker multi band radio equipped with the correct style red tip antenna. The car also has a full tonneau cover. Indeed, it would have been very difficult to order a more expensive Porsche at the time! They received the car as a European delivery example, and brought the car to California, where it has remained since, when it was a few months old. The original owner gave the car to his son in 1998, and he sold it via Fantasy Junction to a previous owner in 2009, and again to the current owner in 2015.

The car currently shows 136,699 miles, and received a sympathetic cosmetic restoration at 128,000 miles. The restoration included new paint, reupholstered interior, and redone top using German Hartz canvas. The wheels were refinished, the engine was completely rebuilt, and the brakes and suspension were also rebuilt. The currently installed engine is a 912-based unit, and the original matching-numbers engine case (retired) is included aside the car. The suspension was completed about 1000 miles ago in 2006 at The Stable in San Francisco. This work included new Koni shock absorbers, new steering coupling, complete front suspension, wheel bearings, and the tires were replaced as well.

The car has a well-kept high end driver level restoration that was done some years ago and is still very nice. The body is excellent, being straight and showing very good fit throughout. The paintwork is free from major blemishes or wear and was done to very good standards. The chrome and brightwork are in excellent shape. The lights and glass are excellent aside from some fading to the rear lenses and a small area of delamination to the front windscreen on the right side. The car has rare Marchal headlamps. The car has a full tonneau cover in addition to the standard soft top boot. The wheels are in excellent shape and a few of the rubber seals (front windscreen seal and mirror base seal) are showing some age. This particular example features original floor pans and battery box which are generally in good structural order, but not overly detailed.

The interior is in very nice shape and was restored to high standards. The leather upholstery shows some minor creasing and patina but is in very good shape overall. The carpets are high quality square weave and are in very good condition. The wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel is beautiful and the dashboard is excellent overall condition, although the knobs appear to be original and are showing some age. The Becker radio is in place and is functional. The gauges and chrome trim are also in very nice shape.

The engine compartment is in very good condition, with the appearance of a car that was correctly restored to high standards some years ago and used occasionally since. There is some aging and dirt present but the overall presentation is attractive and authentic. The trunk is similar in its presentation, with excellent structural members and matching Rudge spare wheel with new leather hold down strap. The rubber trunk mat is excellent and the exterior of the gas tank was cosmetically restored. The jack is also present.

The car runs and drives very well. The engine starts easily, is well-tuned, and makes good power. The gearbox has great synchromesh and the clutch grabs authoritatively. The brakes are effective, and the chassis, suspension, and steering tight. The car is a pleasure to drive, with a communicative feel and eager performance that distinguishes this 356 as everything that a vintage Porsche should be.

This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire one of the coolest, most desirable 356s that we have ever encountered. Not only does this car have fantastic options and colors, but it is a lifelong Northern California car with essentially two owners from new, and has recently won best of show at the Danville Concours. It is fantastically honest and authentic, and will appeal to the connoisseur seeking a truly unique car.
