Description
1963 Porsche 356B Sunroof Coupe
s/n 123000 engine no. 705047
Light Beige with Red Leatherette Interior
Introduced to replace the 356A in 1959, the 356B brought new levels of civilization and refinement to Porsche`s increasingly popular and capable sports car line. As always, the cars incorporated thoughtful and functional design, along with the tried and true Porsche dogmas of high quality, value, reliability, and mechanical robustness.
This particular car is a wonderfully preserved, highly optioned, numbers-matching, and unmolested example that remains in lovely condition. As a late 356B, this car has the T6 body with larger trunk opening and external fuel filler. It was sold new to Richard (Dick) Smothers of the Smothers Brothers, supposedly using money from a Pontiac advertisement the brothers had done. Apparently Pontiac was so displeased that the brothers had each chosen to buy a Porsche that the brothers were fired at that point. Regardless, Mr. Smothers kept the car until 2000 and the registration slips bearing his name are included with the car. Recently, the car has seen much work to keep it running properly, including new front brakes, new Koni shock absorbers, new steering dampener, new exhaust system, new Michelin XZX tires, and new clutch and pressure plate. The original options are very desirable and still present with the car, and include electric sunroof, side spears, head light covers, Nardi steering wheel, Talbot side mirror, chrome wheels, Hella 128 fog lamps, and AM/FM Blaupunkt radio. The car is also an original Super and retains its original numbers-matching engine.
Cosmetically, the car is very presentable with a high quality older repaint that remains very nice. There are a few small blemishes, including some very small cosmetic bubbles at the bottoms of the doors and on the left front fender. The panel fit and gaps are very nice throughout. The chrome is extremely nice too, with just some light surface scratches, and light pitting to the window frames, though most of it is limited to the rear quarter windows. The chrome wheels and hubcaps are excellent, and the lights and glass are very nice.
The interior is about 80 percent original, with a retrimmed rear parcel shelf and new carpets. The remainder of the interior is original, with original seat upholstery, headliner, dashboard, and instruments. All are in extremely nice well-preserved condition. There is hardware for headrests installed on the front seats, but the headrests are not with the car any longer.
The engine and trunk are both unrestored but are clean and tidy. A pair of Weber carburetors is installed, while the correct chromed spare is in the trunk, and also fitted with a new Michelin XZX tire. The underside is original and extremely well-preserved, with no signs of structural damage or corrosion.
This is a very unique opportunity to acquire a comprehensively-optioned matching-numbers Super. This car has is a collector`s dream because of its extensive options, originality, and interesting long-term ownership history. It also comes with its original manual, jack, and tools with tool roll. The recent maintenance ensures that the car is ready to enjoy, and the car is sure to please its new owner.
