Silver with Black Interior
In 1963, Porsche revealed the all-new 911 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Even under contemporary media standards, it’s fair to say the announcement and presentation of the now revolutionary design took the automotive world by storm. Developed largely in secret as a replacement for the highly successful but aging 356, the 911 arrived with a radically new design, including expansive glass, a sweeping aerodynamic fastback body line, more power, and more comfort, all at a surprisingly favorable price when compared against comparable sports cars. The 911 immediately became the darling of the automotive press, and rightly so. Performance and sales were far beyond what Porsche and enthusiasts expected, and, over time, improvements made what was already a ground-breaking car even better.
In September 1969, for the 1970 model year, Porsche released the 2.2L C-Series Model 911 for the 1970 model year. With the larger bore of 2165cc and 125hp, this model was badged as the 911T. Further refinements included lengthening the wheelbase by 2.4 inches, flaring the front and rear fenders to accommodate wider wheels and tires, upgrading the heating and ventilating systems, and numerous other interior and exterior improvements, all of which created a car that greatly benefited from the seven additional years of refinement and customer feedback. Although many variants of the 911 were offered, the 911T was the preferred choice of performance enthusiasts seeking a spirited car for daily use. The clean and pure body design of the coupe was also an excellent and refined offering particularly with the Fuchs wheels and smooth bumper trim.
In 1970 the original and only owner of this Porsche 911T walked into a California Porsche dealership and purchased this car. Having amassed only a few years of professional earnings as an insurance actuary, he secretly harbored a passion for racing and performance cars. Having robbed his savings for racing, the avid amateur enthusiast perpetually lacked the needed cash to fund his dream Porsche purchase. Calculating the risks against the benefits, he surprised himself and his family by stretching his budget to purchase this 911T on credit. At first, he considered using the new Porsche as both a track and daily use vehicle, however that idea didn’t last very long and soon he put his beloved Porsche into regular service driving to and from work in San Diego, CA. Though the car was his daily driver, he always took exemplary care of it displaying it at local car club shows and occasionally attending other events throughout the early 1970s, proudly displayed in his collection of dash plaques mounted on a specially made rear panel which comes with the car.
Having been ordered early, as the chassis number confirms, this was the 364th 911T Coupe produced that year. With records dating back to the first miles driven, the car was carefully preserved and cared for by the same single owner, regularly serviced as shown in the Porsche service booklet. Additional service records accompany the car documenting consistent and consecutively accrued miles through California residency and then locating to Washington State in his retirement years. With documentation from new, numbers matching engine and transmission, and records supporting all services, this Porsche has been recently serviced July 2020 rebuilding both carburetors, lube oil and filter change, brake fluid flush, a new battery, and new wiper blades. Other recent services include a 2017 invoice showing replacement of the shifting rod and bushings, new upper and lower cam cover seals, oil and filter change, brake fluid flush, and a new engine lid strut. Spanning a remarkable half century of singular ownership, this one owner, factory air conditioned 911T is a remarkable example of a truly original car.
Today showing just 64,169 miles, this truly exceptional example of 911 history and singular ownership presents beautifully, with excellent high gloss paint throughout the entire car, showing only minor evidence of road use. A high quality respray performed approximately twenty years ago, the finish contains the right scale and density of metal flake and the application is consistent, not overdone or heavily applied, generally measuring 7mil or less on all panels. The door jambs and other inner body surfaces display excellent paint finish, and the rubber and weather stripping are supple and undamaged. All panels open and shut as expected, displaying excellent dimensions and fit, with crisp door closures, excellent hood fit, and proper part lines consistent with an original car of this caliber. There are no major flaws to detract from the car’s visual presentation either in the finish, bumper trim, or various plated parts. The chrome is very good to excellent condition, while the lights, lenses, and glass are in excellent condition with good gloss, clarity, and coloring, including the rare Cibie fog lamps which still retain the protective covers. The exterior window garnish is in particularly nice condition as are all glass pieces. The correct and original factory dated Fuchs wheels are very nicely presented with proper finish and clean rims with no significant marks or curb rash. Michelin tires are date coded to 2011 but still show ample tread and excellent sidewall condition.
The original interior is exceptionally nice as it has been properly preserved with excellent visual results throughout boasting proudly of the single owner and his consummate care. Fantastic factory black door panels remain tight and smooth, a beautiful dash complete with the rare underside A/C venting, and impossibly fine rear seats are among the many original pieces all of which show only modest signs of use. Even the headliner and sun visors are in superb condition. The carpeting is in such excellent condition it appears to have been replaced at some point, though an excellent match to the original color and weave. The instruments, dial faces, and bright orange indicator needles are in excellent condition and function as expected. The original and preserved steering wheel still retains tight perimeter wrapping which shows only modest use. The radio, various levers, and wonderfully preserved knobs handsomely complete the black interior. Even the date coded original seat belts retain their original 1969 sewn-in factory label flaps.
Under the hood, the engine compartment remains original and retains all of the correct and important components including the carburetors which retain the rare carburetor tags on both units. The matching number factory engine and gearbox are in excellent condition with factory casing marks and stampings. The engine compartment reflects a tidy and proper level of original finish, not overly detailed and certainly never restored. Even the factory A/C unit and plumbing are retained. The various engine tags, emblems, and labels are also in place and in excellent condition. Throughout the engine compartment, correct finishes, appropriate fittings and original style components create a very cohesive original presentation. The front storage area features a correct factory Fuchs spare tire, proper finishes, and, once again, remarkable originality, down to the pristine smugglers bin lid and compartment metal. The undercarriage is clean and solid, displaying original finishes on the factory exhaust and engine components, which have benefited from decades of dry California ownership. The tub appears visually and structurally original with no notable corrosion or damage to the proper factory stampings and finishes, all of which appear original and unmolested as one might expect given the 50 years of singular ownership.
The car starts instantly, revs responsively, and runs smoothly at idle, offering a pleasing exhaust note when blipping the throttle. Once warm, you are smoothly underway. Seating position and controls feel just right and ready for action - a hallmark of Porsche design and simplicity particularly with these 1970 models. On the road, this 911T delivers brilliant response as only an original car can offer. The engine makes great power, and the chassis conveys a tight ride, excellent handling, and spirited acceleration. The car pulls cleanly through the rev range without hesitation or excessive vibration. The motor is crisp, offering excellent power due in part to the recently rebuilt carburetors. The transmission shifts smoothly warm or cold without bearing noise, working in harmony with the smoothly revving engine. In corners, the front end feels tight and confident, not loose, or light even when cruising at highway speeds. The integrity of the car is so engaging as each mile validates the authoritative mechanical condition, originality, body integrity, and beautifully maintained interior.
This truly remarkable time capsule Porsche 911T is offered with the original Porsche owner’s manual inscribed with the single owner’s name, Porsche maintenance record booklet with filled in entries and owner notation, two Porsche 911 service binders, various Porsche service manuals, the original owner booklet vinyl case, factory tools in the factory roll, a factory jack, a set of four period correct coco mats, a specially made removable interior panel with multiple 1970s event plaques, spare key fobs, and a voluminous file containing all known ownership records since new, receipts for recent service, and a host of owner notations and ownership records. This exceptionally well-maintained and preserved 911T combines great driving pleasure and wonderfully enjoyable cosmetics in a delightful car. The next fortunate owner can immediately enjoy presentation in any Porsche show, or continue to use just as the original singular owner did, driving an aspirational dream while preserving an important part of the 911 legacy for future generations to enjoy.
