1972 Porsche 911T Targa
s/n 9112110249, engine no. 6120580
Glacier Blue with Black Interior

Early 911s embody a combination that is rare among collector cars today. They have unparalleled drivability and usability, especially when compared with other cars of the same vintage, but are also wholly evocative of a different era. There is a certain wholeness, cohesiveness, agility, and communicativeness that is only evident when they are driven, and it is no surprise that they have a fanatical following. For many years, however, they were just used cars, which makes finding genuinely solid examples which have been continuously cared throughout the car's life difficult today. All early 911s have appreciated tremendously in recent years and the late cars (1972 and 1973), which are fitted with 2.4 liter engines, are the ultimate development of the 'long hood' 911.

This particular car is a matching-numbers example that was originally finished in the color combination it wears today: glacier blue with black interior. The car’s first owner was a U.S. Naval officer and kept it until 1998. He purchased it new on 7 March 1972 at the Porsche dealer in Arlington, Virginia and brought the car with him to the Monterey area when he moved there in 1973. The first three services were performed at the original servicing dealer. He sold the car to his brother in law in 1998 who maintained the car well, including a complete engine rebuild in 2006 7000 miles ago (documentation on file). A new clutch was also fitted at this time and the brakes were also comprehensively rebuilt.

In 2014-15, the car’s third owner had a cosmetic restoration performed, including stripping the car to bare metal, replacing the front fuel tank support pan, and repainting it in its entirety. The carpets and upholstery were also renewed, with the work performed by the highly regarded specialist Autobahn Interiors in San Diego. Various body seals were also replaced, the valves adjusted, and the wheels refinished as well. The car was converted to MSD ignition at this time as well.

Cosmetically, the car is an attractive driver. The paintwork is glossy and the striking original color was faithfully recreated when the car was resprayed. The panel fit is good on balance, although the front and rear deck lids sit a bit proud and the right door is also proud at the bottom. The paint shows virtually no wear and the car has a new orange bar hood crest. The chrome and brightwork are generally nice, although there is some pitting on the horn grilles. The glass and lights are in good shape and the car has H4 headlamps. The top was restored and is in excellent shape.

The interior has excellent upholstery and carpets, both with high quality materials and excellent workmanship. The dashboard is in excellent shape aside from two small cracks between the horn grille and defroster vent. The door panels themselves are in excellent shape, but the passenger’s front door pocket is missing and the driver’s front door pocket is showing its age. The car is fitted with a Blaupunkt radio. The gauges are unrestored and show some age, as do the steering column stalk switches and plastic steering wheel (which has a leather cover).

The engine compartment is quite clean and tidy, but certain components like the fan shroud show some cosmetic aging. A new heat pad has been fitted and the MFI intake system is complete. The trunk has correct type carpet and is in good structural condition, and is painted black. The car is fitted with correct twin batteries and steel spare wheel.

This is a great opportunity to acquire a nice driver level matching numbers (both engine and transmission) 911T Targa that has been restored in its very cool original color combination. The car has few owners from new (believed to be 3) and has had over $30,000 in restoration work. It has its original books set (including maintenance booklet), Certificate of Authenticity, photos from the restoration, and about 15 years of service records.
