General Overview
The 1960s marked a significant evolution for Ferrari with the introduction of the legendary Dino. The transition to mid-engine cars from the front-engine V12s of yesteryear marked a conceptual shift inspired by the mid-engine layout's success in Ferrari’s racing division. This eventually led to the development of Ferrari's first mid-engine V8 production road car, the 308 GTB. Launched in 1975, the 308 was a commercial success and established this engine format as the quintessential performance platform for decades to come. The late 1980s and early 1990s were a challenging time for Ferrari as competition intensified from newer manufacturers. The Ferrari 348, introduced in 1989 as the successor to the 328 arrived as a new offering, but ultimately it would be the F355, launched in 1994, that would signal a truly advanced leap in performance technology.
Designed and developed with Pininfarina, the F355 was a far more advanced car than its predecessor. The sophisticated body design incorporated considerable aerodynamic refinement derived from Ferrari’s in-house F1 testing. The car featured a composite body and extensive use of aluminum in the chassis, which significantly reduced weight. One of the most lauded features of the F355 was the engine. Powered by a 3.5-liter V8, the engine featured a 5-valve per cylinder configuration allowing for better intake and exhaust flow. This innovation significantly improved performance, pushing the engine to produce an impressive 375 horsepower. The F355 could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds, with a top speed of around 183 mph. Debuted in 1995, the spider featured a semi-automatic soft top, combining the performance of the Berlinetta with the allure of open-air driving. Rarely found in these colors, exemplary presentation, and low miles. this F355 is 1 of just 2,664 gated six speed manual spiders produced.
History of This Car
This beautiful Ferrari F355 was manufactured in Maranello, Italy, and completed in October 1996. It was delivered to the first owner in Miami, Florida, where it remained for just two years before the original owner moved to California. Service records accompanying the car support the original owner’s accumulation of consecutive miles while serviced by California based Ferrari specialists. The second and current consigning owner purchased it in 2014 with a mere 11,000 miles indicated. A detailed and itemized record of collective services spanning 2010-2021 cover numerous items including engine out services in 2010 and 2013 with 11,010 miles, new clutch at 8,264 miles, valves and valve guides at 7,805 miles, cam timing, convertible top services, fluid and filter changes, and other services all of which totaled over $70,000 during this eleven-year period. Under current ownership, the car has continued California residency as represented by the service records and current Carfax report, both of which support the consistently accrued 13,569 miles.
General Condition
Today, this splendid Ferrari F355 dazzles in Blu Swaters Metallico. The deep blue finish is complemented by a matching blue leather interior and soft top, all of which are in excellent condition. Digital paint meter readings suggest the driver's side front fender may have undergone prior paintwork; however, the repair is seamless, showing no discernible differences in the finish. Remaining metal body panels return paint thickness readings consistent with factory finish. Service records indicate both the rear spoiler and front bumper were refinished most likely for cosmetic freshening due to typical road use. The glass bears original brand etches and remains in excellent condition including the windshield. Headlights and tail lights are in excellent condition and the headlights open and close under smooth operation. The body is straight, with all opening features showing consistent panel gaps. The car is outfitted with factory magnesium wheels, which are in superb condition, wearing a set of Pirelli 225/40 ZR18 front and tires bearing manufacturing year codes 2012/13.
The interior is very nicely preserved featuring original blue leather upholstery creating a striking yet elegant atmosphere. The seats are comfortable and supportive still retaining soft supple leather surfaces and excellent stitching. Controls and switches are correct, operational, while the factory gauges display excellent color and clarity. The dashboard features a Sony stereo system with a Sony 6-disc CD changer and Precision Power A200.2 amp, both remotely located in the front trunk compartment which is equally well-kept. The gated 6-speed manual gear shift is prominently featured in the center console accompanied by climate controls and other power switches all of which maintain very good finishes throughout. Matching blue carpets continue the interior theme retaining the original appearance accented by lightened alloy foot pedals. Rarely found with 6-speed manual transmissions, the convertible top rests in the open position covered by a matching blue top boot which fits snugly over the blue canvas. Currently the power convertible top raises and lowers but benefits from manual assistance to ensure secure latching at the windshield and nesting in the down position.
Under the mid-engine lid, the legendary 3.5-liter Ferrari V8 has been properly maintained by Ferrari specialists and detailed with preservation in support of the low original miles. Notable details include correct and original textured red paint on the cam covers, correct black over alloy induction castings, and factory correct Ferrari airboxes. Major services include valve guide replacement and new catalytic converters as well as attention to all fluids and filters as recommended. Factory engine components, Ferrari castings, and various engine bay details are consistent with original details offered when new including the factory paint label indicating Metallic Swaters Blue. The underside is in excellent condition, indicative of the low miles with very good finishes, nicely preserved alloy engine and gearbox castings, and correct exhaust. There is no evidence of structural compromise to the chassis floor or suspension mounts.
Driving this Ferrari F355, the gated 6-speed manual transmission is a tactile and engaging experience. The distinct gear action moving through the exposed gated shifter resonates with precision, in harmony with the refined engine note. On the road, the F355 is delightfully manageable in city traffic but can immediately summon Ferrari’s Formula 1 lineage when pressed into more spirited driving. The steering is wonderfully weighted delivering a nimble and responsive driving on winding back roads particularly with the top down. The experience of open cabin, mid-engine driving is impressive listening either to the premium stereo or captivating engine sounds.
