When Henry Ford launched his fledgling car company well over 100 years ago, no one would have imagined that the company so dedicated to producing the simple and common Model T would eventually develop some of the most amazing performance cars of the century. Certainly no one attending the 2003 Detroit Auto Show was prepared for the all-new GT40 Concept car. But it was that very spark, that 100 year celebration of automotive excellence that spawned the Ford GT and eventually brought it into production.
Penned by Camilo Pardo, then head of the “Legends” studio, the GT40 concept car was lauded for both its stunning looks and engineering, but surely a car as dramatic as this would never see production. Yet Ford shocked the public once again with the announcement that indeed, production would begin in 2004 with models delivered through 2005. In a matter of months, demand for the radical and powerful Ford GT far exceeded supply as the public witnessed magazine test after test as the Ford GT bested many of the more expensive contemporary exotics – all while being far more reliable and far less costly to maintain. Just as Ford had so surprisingly done when they beat Ferrari on the racetrack, the unprecedented “one-two-three” Le Mans victory reminded everyone that Ford was determined to build a supercar capable of delivering premier performance. During the two-year production run from 2004-2005, Ford built 4,000 GTs. Anyone fortunate enough to purchase one new could chose from just four available options: a McIntosh sound system, Racing Stripes, Painted Brake Calipers, and Forged Alloy Wheels.
Designed with reverence to the ground-breaking mid-engine GT40 race and street cars which won Le Mans four years on the trot, the amazing design featured an aerodynamically advanced body, doors that cut into the roofline to aid entrance and exit, sweeping glass, a visible mid-engine seen through the rear window, and improved intake and warm air extractors that significantly improved both engine and brake cooling. Far more than a visually arresting shape, the Ford GT featured a number of innovative technologies including a superplastic thermo-formed frame, aluminum formed body panels, roll bonded floors (for increased rigidity and structural improvement), a lightweight magnesium center console, and a dizzying array of hyper-technology manufacturing processes using state of the art composite materials and bonding technology to deliver a rigid yet lightweight platform. The resultant chassis was so resilient that it was capable of meeting modern safety requirements within a very short window of development time. Exceptional technology was not limited to the chassis alone as the mid-mounted 5.4 liter Ford Modular dual overhead cam V8 engine, equipped with a twin screw supercharger, was mated to a Ricardo six-speed manual transmission. Potent and highly capable, the Ford GT delivered top numbers in every performance test with 0-60 3.3 second times, the quarter mile lapsing in 11.4 seconds, and a top speed over 205 mph.
Immensely desirable from the outset, the GT has only become more desirable during the 15 years that have elapsed since it was introduced. Collectors have grown increasingly appreciative of the distinctive looks, performance, celebrated racing heritage, and ease of use and service. Having grown significantly in value, enthusiasts continue to seek out carefully owned examples with excellent provenance and documented low mileage.
This beautiful 2005 Ford GT was delivered new from the factory to the current and only California owner who ordered all four of the available options, including the beautiful blue racing stripes. Assembled at the Wixom, MI factory plant, this car is #0734 of just 2022 cars built in 2005 and one of only 504 manufactured in Centennial White. A recent Carfax confirms the single ownership and low accumulated miles. The original, singular owner has regularly serviced the car, keeping it stored indoors, accumulating just 2,667 miles since purchased new. All service has been performed as needed, including the NHTSA 2015 factory warranty replacement for the driver side airbag. The car has also been dealer serviced for the separate 2016 NHTSA recall for passenger airbag inflators replacement.
Today, this beautifully preserved Ford GT presents essentially as new with beautiful factory original gleaming white paint, stunning polished factory optional wheels, and all glass, lenses, and exterior body trim in excellent cosmetic condition. The upper body panels are in excellent condition showing no warping or lifting in corners, often seen in cars that have been subjected to harsh use. There are no chips or scratches in the gorgeous wraparound windshield. The front edge of the hood has two very minor road chips showing in the blue stripe area, visible only on close inspection.
Stepping up to the driver’s door, the latch is easily accessed as the door swings open, revealing the distinctive roof panel opening as it separates from the door body. The interior immediately displays excellent finishes throughout the factory ebony interior, with smooth and supple leather trimmed seats, excellent dashboard, and console, all beautifully finished with fine materials and careful craftsmanship. Even the polished doorsill plates remain in excellent condition. The six-speed manual is a delightful engagement to any performance enthusiast who enjoys manual shifting - in the spirit of the original GT40, a car that has since become a multi-million dollar motorsports icon of the 20th century. Under the hinged clamshell rear deck, the stout and visually arresting supercharged engine has been meticulously maintained both mechanically and cosmetically, showing little to no signs of use, only lightly hued from use. The exposed suspension, mechanical components and detailed features are all in excellent condition throughout. Lifting the hinged front section reveals a clean and meticulously maintained storage area showing factory fresh finishes and details.
The undercarriage of the car is very well maintained with no notable damage or significant road scars, even along the three reverse-dimpled aerodynamic factory chassis armor panels, which remain in place. Suspension and various exposed components in the underside are in excellent condition, with clean and fresh appearance, showing only minor evidence of use. The wishbones are machined from billet and are works of art in their own right.
The car starts easily, setting off a sonorous supercharged V8 blast of energy that resonates perfectly at idle. Seating position inside is excellent offering great forward visibility and side views of remarkable expanse. The car is remarkably mild-tempered and easy to drive when the driver wants. Control forces are easy to manage, the clutch is progressive, and the overall experience is not at all intimidating. That said, the real fun begins when an open section of roadway allows the GT to stretch its legs. Power comes on in one giant gulp as the car awakens and an unforgettable rush of mid-engine power and torque press your shoulder blades and you are instantly at highway speeds. Cornering and braking are on a par with some of the best track cars of this period, and yet, this is still a very usable road car which is happy to potter around when asked. Even with the high speed capability or taking on more challenging roadways, one is just as easily at home cruising in gentle traffic with the radio and extremely effective air conditioning on, simply enjoying the scenery and the experience of being in such a remarkable car.
This rare and amazing Ford GT is available with the original window sticker, trickle charger, factory literature, and owner’s manual with factory leatherette pouch. Ready for immediate and enjoyable use, this Ford GT remains among one of the most sought-after collectible supercars and certainly one of the most iconic examples of sports car performance. Equipped with all four options and still with its original owner, this 2,700 mile GT is a superb example. Steeped in the GT40 heritage and racing traditions, the Ford GT represents enjoyable premium sports car ownership without all the fuss and maintenance challenges experienced in many comparable exotics.
