Offered in both sedan and wagon configurations, premium pricing limited production to just under 3,500 units during the brief period these cars were offered. With sales diminishing as the R package evolved, 2007 was the last year of production for the R model. Well-maintained original examples are becoming increasingly harder to find as enthusiasts discover the unique blend of family-friendly premium wagon features coupled with sports car performance.

History and Build of This Car

This example was delivered to Smothers European, Santa Rosa, CA on January 6, 2005. The second owner purchased the car in 2o08 with approximately 40,000 miles and retained it until selling it to the current owner in 2022. Finished in Silver Metallic with Blue leather interior. In addition to the R model features, cost-extra options and packages were offered including the following items listed on the window sticker accompanying this V70.

Under long-term Northern California second ownership, according to the recent Carfax, this car was given a 90k service at the original selling dealership with 86,681 miles in 2015 including new engine mounts, fluids and filters, and a new battery. In 2016, an oil and filter change was performed at 87,852 miles, and again in 2018 with 89,000 miles along with an anti-theft device repair also performed at the original selling dealer. Subsequent oil changes were performed along with California emissions testing. The current owner purchased the car in June 2022, with approximately 93,000 miles. Shortly after purchase, rear brake rotors and pads were purchased along with wheel bolts and spacers which were installed by a staff mechanic at Fantasy Junction. Condition Overview

Today this Volvo presents in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition throughout. Unlike many of these cars which are more typically exposed to East Coast, snow or mountain climates in the PNW/Tahoe/Colorado, this example has benefited from drier climate use with excellent finishes, supple interior materials, and a dry chassis. The silver metallic paint has been metered with a digital paint meter indicating numbers consistent with original paint. The factory body VIN numbers for the doors, fenders, and rear hatch are in place. The lights, wipers, ventilation system, power sunroof, AC, radio, and turn indicators all function and the 6 CD disc player operates properly. The leather interior is in excellent condition with mild relaxing to the driver’s side seat cushion and left side support bolster. Leather surfaces front and rear are in excellent condition as are the door panels, headliner, and smooth dashboard. The instrument panel features unique R Type blue watch dial faces and the various climate controls operate properly. The car wears a beautiful set of Type R Pegasus alloy rims which are in excellent condition with Toyo Proxes 235/45 ZR17 tires.

The engine compartment is clean and tidy with correct factory features in place and correct R series features for the 300hp engine. The underside of the car is in excellent condition having been properly maintained by the third and current owner. There is no evidence of structural compromise to the floor or suspension mounting points and no fluid drips evident when parked.

Having benefited from indoor storage and professional care, this car starts, runs, and drives exceptionally well. The overall condition and performance are refreshing considering the near 20-year age. Acceleration is welcomingly brisk and handling surprisingly adept in a range of driving conditions. The Four-C electronically controlled chassis/suspension settings (unique to the V70 R model) offer three settings that deliver noticeable different handling and comfort settings which makes a meaningful difference in the driving experience. Highway speeds deliver smooth operation, excellent stability, and rewarding fuel economy for a full-sized wagon.
