Early 911s embody a combination that is rare among collector cars today. They have unparalleled drivability and usability, especially when compared with other cars of the same vintage, but are also wholly evocative of a different era. There is a certain wholeness, cohesiveness, agility, and communicativeness that is only evident when they are driven, and it is no surprise that they have a fanatical following. For many years, however, they were just used cars, which makes finding genuinely solid examples which have been continuously cared throughout the car’s life difficult today. All early 911s have appreciated tremendously in recent years and the late cars (1972 and 1973), which are fitted with 2.4 liter engines, are the ultimate development of the ‘long hood’ 911. Early 1973 911Ts sold in the United States featured the MFI (mechanical fuel injection) system of the early cars, while late ones employed CIS (continuous injection system) that was shared with 1974 onward cars including the 911SC.

This is an early 1973 model that was originally equipped with MFI and has been converted to Webers. The original MFI is included with the car. According to the Certificate of Authenticity on file, this matching numbers car that is still finished in its original colors of tangerine with black interior, and was equipped for the US market. Optional equipment included front and rear stabilizer bars, a manual antenna, loud speaker, noise suppression, the comfort kit, tinted windows, and 6×15 wheels shod with Dunlop tires.

Having been comprehensively restored in recent years, this matching numbers car is immaculate above and below, and appears to have always been a straight and solid dry climate car. According to the present owner, the paintwork was performed from bare metal up on undamaged panels, and certainly its presentation supports that. The interior has been comprehensively restored using correct materials. The restorative works included the majority of the mechanical systems as well, including a conversion from the occasionally problematic and performance limiting injection system as originally delivered, to Weber carburetors. The restoration work was completed in late 2015.

During the restoration, many components were rebuilt or replaced. The parts receipts on hand indicate the lower end of the engine was rebuilt with new rod and main bearings. Select cylinder head studs were also replaced. The carburetors were rebuilt with new kits, and the fuel lines replaced. The balance of the engine was resealed and the engine bay cosmetically restored. The brake calipers were rebuilt, fitted with new pads, and new brake lines fitted. The master cylinder was also reconditioned. New shocks were sourced and installed, and the suspension rebuilt as needed with new tie rod ends, ball joints, and bushings. New wheel bearings were fitted, and the steering rack fitted with new boots. New engine oil level and fuel level senders were installed, and a new fuel gauge installed. New bumper, body, and window rubbers were sourced and installed, along with a new windshield. New plastic indicator and brake lenses have been installed as well. New heat exchangers were mated to a media blasted muffler, and a new starter installed. New engine lid and front storage area shocks were also installed. The dash was given a new speaker cover, and the interior door pockets renewed.

The resulting car is beautiful to look at, possibly even better cosmetically than when it was new! The paint, window frames and other brightwork, and upholstery are without a single significant flaw. The engine bay sparkles with a fresh appearance, as does the underside. The presentation is truly outstanding.

The car also drives well. The engine makes excellent power, and has the throaty roar of an early carbureted car. The transmission shifts well, and the brakes stop the car with confidence. The suspension has a taut feel, and the car has clearly logged very few miles since the restoration was completed a few months ago. On file are records for a post-restoration sorting to include timing and jetting adjustments, correction of a minor oil leak at the sending unit, adjusting the hand brake, and troubleshooting the dome light.

Included with the car is the Certificate of Authenticity confirming this as a matching numbers, original tangerine colored car, restoration receipts for parts and materials, and the original MFI injection set up should the next owner wish to convert it back to the original induction configuration.
