History of Maserati and the A6G/2000 Coupe

Forged in the trials of racing and celebrated with the flags of victory, Maserati built their reputation on the trident of performance engineering, uncompromised artisanship, and Italian passion. These attributes motivated the Maserati brothers to craft some of the world’s finest race cars, attracting top-tier drivers, wealthy patrons, and premier talent. Though lacking the resources of larger companies, Maserati remained highly competitive against heavily funded competitors. Realizing the need for consistent income to satisfy racing costs, Maserati shifted to building dual-purpose vehicles capable of both race and touring use.

Though Maserati enjoyed success with their popular 4-cylinder engines, the 6-cylinder 1.5 L A6G was developed as the next level of performance powered purpose-built monoposto competition cars. These met with regular success in both works cars and privateer entries, but the most notable success came with the A6GCS advancing the prowess of Maserati from 1947-1953 with win after win. By 1954 the engine developed into the A6G/2000 offered in Gran Turismo configuration with coachwork from Pinin Farina, Frua, and Allemano. The new 2000 engine hit the sweet spot of competition power and durability making it a formidable competitor against larger displacement entries from Jaguar and Ferrari. By 1956 Maserati was poised for what would become an historic year. Concurrent with the A6G competition cars, Maserati introduced the 250F Grand Prix Monoposto, a car that would compete handily against Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari piloted by legendary drivers such as Sterling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio.

As modern media began worldwide distribution, promotion and marketing of sports car racing surged in both Europe and North America. The 50s would advance performance car driving while “gentleman racers” emerged as ambassadors of the sporting elite. This combination was ideal for Maserati who could leverage their racing history and handcrafted coachwork GT offerings as premier dual-purpose examples to serve this growing market.

History of Maserati S6G/2000 Allemano #2147

Known for their exceptional design and coachbuilding skills, Allemano were a uniquely positioned Italian coachbuilder. Having worked with essentially all the premier Italian manufacturers, Allemano also built cars for Jaguar, Aston Martin, and one of the most remarkable mid-engine cars ever conceived, the ATS 2500 GT. Hosting the design expertise of Michelotti, Scaglione, and Savonuzzi, Allemano became an ideal partner for Maserati to showcase their premier road cars.

As one of the few hand-built Allemano Maseratis built in this series, #2147 (originally designated 2144) was ordered new from the factory by American Richard “Dick” Cicurel in 1956. Living in Europe at that time, Cicurel intended to use the car in rally events and thus requested specific rally items to be designed and built into his car. Copies of the original Maserati build sheets indicate approximately 50 items were specifically built with this car. Maserati historian Ermano Cozza has confirmed that this is the sole example of a rally equipped A6G/2000 built by Maserati.

Among the many details fitted at the factory and later as part of construction at Allemano, #2147 was equipped with the following features, resulting in it being, at that time, the most expensive Maserati road car ever built:
- Competition differential
- Larger capacity fuel tank
- Quick fill fuel filler cap
- Special backup lights
- Marchal fog lamps
- Halda Speedpilot
- Folding armrest
- Extra instrumentation
- Jaeger-LeCoultre Chronograph
(this item provided by Cicurel procured from his Bugatti)

Cicurel enjoyed the car without hesitation, driving it in rallies though eventually damaging it in a road accident. The car was promptly returned to Maserati where it was fully repaired and numbered at the factory from 2144 to 2147, the number it has retained nearly its entire life and retains today. After the repairs were completed, Maserati featured the car in period advertisements and brochures wearing the distinctive red and black livery it wears today.

After Cicurel’s ownership, the car remained in Italy with two subsequent owners until it was imported to the US in 1976 residing in California under private ownership. By 1988, the car was acquired by the Rosso & Bianco collection (Peter Kaus) followed by Evert Louwman, Netherlands, in 2004. In 2006 #2147 was sold at auction accompanied by engine #2180, formerly in the prototype A6G Grand Sport Frua Spider. Shortly after purchase, a concours level restoration was performed which concluded in 2009. In 2009 the car was shown at the Modena Maserati Club Elegance where it was nominated “Best of Show” and in 2010 it was displayed at the Schloss Dyck Event winning 1st in class. In 2012 this car received a FIVA identity card which accompanies the car today. In recent years, this Maserati has been lavished with additional cosmetic and mechanical attention including detailed work performed by experts at Phil Reilley & Co, Inc. (2024-2025). Services on the car while at Reilly’s included the installation of engine #2146, a new clutch, gearbox output shaft and clutch release rod work, pressure plate adjustment, generator and water pump services, brake and master cylinder work, and numerous other mechanical details totaling over $50k. To further ensure the mechanical systems and cosmetics were ready for a confident presentation, the owner spent an additional $16k with Rex Nguyen in preparation for the 2025 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance where it received a class award.

Condition and Presentation

Today this Maserati presents as a singularly stunning A6G/2000 with unique features, comprehensive documentation, and superlative restoration. The distinctive Allemano lines are subtly expressed through the exquisite two-tone paint scheme which truly enhances the rally theme originally conceived by the commissioning owner and fulfilled by Maserati and Allemano. The beautiful details, sculptural body lines, delicately louvered side vents, and distinctive grille opening all contribute to the stunning coachwork and purposeful stance. A set of gleaming Borrani wire wheels wear Pirelli Cinturatos perfectly positioned as black wall tires blend harmoniously with the black paint. In virtually every view, the gorgeous body design is enhanced by the two-tone finish, beautiful chrome, and delicate details befitting the traditions of hand crafted Italian coachwork as recognized by a class award at Pebble Beach.

Opening the driver’s door, the black and red theme continues with supple black leather vividly contrasting the red dashboard and red carpets. The leather seats are beautifully upholstered with correct red accent piping and pleating patterns. The rear seating/storage area, headliner, door panels, and captivating rally instrumentation further convey the unique origins of this special Maserati. The wood rimmed flat profile Nardi steering wheel is handsomely finished as are other fine details including the gear shift lever with reverse gate lever guard, delicate door pulls, fold down sun visors, and rear compartment luggage straps. The trunk compartment has been faithfully restored using peppered red and black carpet, a matching full sized Borrani spare wheel, and quick fuel filler cap.

Under the hood, the stunning inline 6-cylinder engine delivers a very strong and captivating visual impression. The restoration performed on the car addressed every aspect of the engine and engine bay with absolute care and accuracy to the finishes and component details. Various casting finishes, correct Weber carburetors, stunning finishes, proper hoses, lines, and correct fasteners have been correctly sourced and installed consistent with the original build. The undercarriage is clean and well-tended, showing excellent fit and finish and correct components restored to proper specifications.

This Maserati is accompanied by numerous factory documents, copies of reference letters, internal factory records for the rebuild in 1956, hand written notes documenting prior ownership, photos of the restoration work, and the FIVA Identity Card.
