General Overview

The launch of the 1953 Corvette created quite a stir among automotive enthusiasts. Although it was more of a boulevardier than performance car, by the time the 63 Stingray arrived it had evolved into quite a performance car. The initial design, captured by the youthful Pete Brock and refined by Corvette designer Larry Shinoda, changed only slightly while handling and performance jumped ahead in the hands of legendary Zora Arkus Duntov.

In the final year of production, Chevrolet upped performance to significant levels including the powerful 427/400 hp hydraulic lifter L68 featuring three Holley 2bbl carburetors “Tri-Power”. Automotive press raved about the astonishing power and usability of the Corvette, particularly in the roadster configuration, which made top-down driving exhilarating via the 4-speed manual transmission. Legendary torque and acceleration captured under a chiseled race-bred body made the last of these iconic Corvettes the most sought after by collectors and performance enthusiasts.

History and Build Details of This Car

According to the original preserved gas tank sheet, original window sticker, and original sales invoice included with this Corvette, this factory 427 roadster was produced November 4, 1966. The car was finished from the factory in Goodwood Green with a white top, trimmed with green vinyl interior, and optioned with tinted glass, hardtop, pushbutton AM/FM radio, 4-speed close ratio transmission, 3.36 positraction rear axle, and 390 hp V8 with notation on the original gas tank label, original window sticker, and original sales invoice “Conv. 390 to 400 hp”. The car was delivered to E.J. Wyatt Chevrolet, South Boston, Virginia and sold to Mr. Steve Compton, Aspen, Virginia on December 28, 1966.

The restoration performed on this car was specifically prepared to meet the rigors of NCRS judging. When the restoration was completed in 2021, the car was submitted for judging and achieved a Bloomington Gold Certification on June 18, 2021. Shortly after, this Corvette was sold to the current owner. Recent services from Vintage Vehicles, Novato, CA, include service for two carburetors, new distributor cap and rotor, new coil, new voltage regulator, points and condenser, brake service including rebuilding the right front caliper, and general inspection (2022). In 2024 the car returned to the same shop who replaced the oil pan including a new oil filter gasket, removed water pump and replaced gaskets (water pump OK), a new rear carburetor fuel bowl, the fuel tank sending unit replaced, and the convertible top lubricated and adjusted.

Condition Overview

Today this Corvette roadster presents in exceptional condition throughout offering beautiful, correctly restored finishes, accurately prepared as recognized by the Bloomington Gold Certificate. The Goodwood Green paint is glossy and smooth, correct metal flake composition, and excellent coverage throughout the body. In addition to the exceptional workmanship on the exterior, the inner strike surfaces and underside panels are equally finished to a high standard. The hood, doors, and trunk show excellent panel gaps, opening and closing with confident latching. The doors offer tight closure as well even when gently closed. The exterior chrome and polished trim, emblems, and badges are like new. Throughout the car, all rubber, gaskets, glass, lenses, and lighting have excellent factory finishes. The carefully performed restoration includes a beautiful grille, excellent stripe lines on the distinctive power bulge stinger hood, and smooth operating hidden headlights. A set of factory stamped steel wheels are finished in silver with correct trim rings and center caps all of which show no significant scratches or marks. A set of BFGoodrich redline tires complete the powerful big block stance for this roadster.

The interior has been restored to top standards as well using correct grain green vinyl for the seats and door panels, and accurate satin black finishes for the dashboard and center console, correct low pile green carpet, and of course, the perfect option – the factory 4-speed with center console. Every aspect of the interior is correctly presented with proper materials including the instrument panel and beautifully finished gauges. The center console, radio, and faux wood steering wheel further complement the performance lineage of this Corvette. The white convertible top is in excellent condition as well, fitting easily to the windshield header and displaying a clear rear plastic window.

Under the hood, the 400 hp matching numbers engine displays the matching production sequence number on the stamping pad which is stamped over the broach marks indicative of original Chevrolet castings. The painted finishes under the hood have been correctly applied giving the car an original appearance with the added plus of tri-power intake, triple carburetors, and chrome air cleaner adding up to the impressive 400hp output which was a stout combination given the light weight of the roadster model. The engine compartment is very crisp, detailed, and tastefully done. The underside reveals a properly restored chassis with correct features and proper markings per original production designations. There is no visual evidence of structural compromise to the chassis or suspension mounting points.

The car starts easily and runs very well delivering a powerful exhaust note from the 427/400hp engine. The 4-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly and offers stout acceleration, ideally matched to the higher horsepower engine. Best of all with independent rear suspension and four-wheel disc brakes, inspired performance driving is readily available and surprisingly modern considering the years that have passed since this rare Corvette 427 roadster was built.

Beautifully restored and recognized for its authentic factory presentation with a Bloomington Gold Certificate, this 427 roadster is ready to delight any Corvette enthusiast with the driving pleasure and delight of ownership, future Corvette club showings, and chasing down sunset drives with a fortunate passenger in one of the most iconic American sports cars ever built.
