General History
The Jaguar E-type changed everything in the sports car world. And no one expected it. Even Enzo Ferrari who declared, upon seeing it for the first time, that it was the most beautiful car in the world. Stunning design, unrivaled performance, and racing lineage made the E-Type an immediate sensation. With its beautiful lines and surprisingly affordable price, the E-Type grew to iconic status where it has remained for more than half a century adored by collectors and enthusiasts. Independent front and rear suspension, disc brakes all around (inboard at the rear to reduce unsprung weight), and Jaguar’s legendary twin-cam inline six-cylinder engine were just part of the allure. Sales were brisk in both coupe and roadster form with continuous development growing in American and European markets, affording ongoing advances including the 4.2-liter engine and fully synchronized gearboxes for 1965. Later cars, particularly those imported to the United States, had safety and emissions equipment that negatively influenced both performance and aesthetics, thus making Series I 4.2-liter cars among the most desirable among performance enthusiasts.
History of this Jaguar
According to information shared under prior ownership and service documents dating back to 1988, this Jaguar is known to have been in Northern California since the 1980s and very likely since delivered new. The car was enjoyed by the former owner from late 1980s until 2007, then with 37,000 miles indicated, when it was treated to a mechanical restoration including an engine rebuild, carburetor rebuild, new clutch, new heater core, and a new convertible top. After driving the car for approximately 1,00o0 miles, the former owner consigned it to Fantasy Junction in 2011, selling it that same year to the current owner. Invoices accompanying the car indicate consecutively accumulated miles from 1988 – 34,196 miles, 1992 – 35,852 miles, 1996 – 36,179, 1999 – 36,706 miles, 2009 – 37,167 (engine rebuild), 2013 – 38,319 miles, 2015 – 39,162 miles, 2020 – 40,183 miles.
Services in 2020 under current ownership include a new radiator, new clutch and resurfaced flywheel, new clutch shaft, new throw out bearing, head removed to clean piston tops, new head studs, valve adjustment, new upper timing chain guides, new carburetor diaphragms, clean and lube speedo cable, and new tires. In 2017 stainless steel exhaust was installed, a Cool Cat fan fitted, new upgraded motor mounts installed, a new tachometer generator installed, front cylinder head studs resealed, heater repair performed, and new spark plugs installed. Prior mechanical history for this car dates back to 1988 with regular services and maintenance under current ownership for the past 15 years including continued restoration work performed on the car in 2011 (new interior seats and center console, radio and speakers, new steering wheel and hub) and additional mechanical work performed in 2013.
Current Condition
Today, this Jaguar presents as an ideal XKE for the enthusiast who enjoys driving, attending local shows, and participating in Jaguar club events. The paint is smooth and glossy throughout, and while an older finish, it remains quite nice, showing only minor evidence of age and a few stone chips from general use. The underside portions of the doors, hood, and trunk appear original and likely retain the original paint. Having never needed comprehensive disassembly, the panel fit is typical for original cars as this example has been refinished and freshened for driving enjoyment. The trim, script, and piping are well preserved and nicely finished having been refinished or replaced during the 2009 restoration and under current ownership over the past decade. The wire wheels wear dual ear knockoffs and Vredestein 185 VR15 tires installed in 2020.
The interior is in handsome condition having been thoughtfully redone with correct leather seats and excellent quality carpeting. The wood rimmed steering wheel fronts a very nicely finished dashboard including crisp and clear gauges with excellent nomenclature and correct color, while the various toggle switches, dials, and controls are all quite nice including the Becker Europa radio which was installed with ipod connectivity. The black convertible top is in excellent condition both inside and out, has a clear plastic rear window, and stows properly in the area behind the seats concealed by a black canvas top cover. A matching black center-zipper tonneau cover is also included with the car. The trunk is finished with tan materials and houses a spare wire wheel under the removable trunk floor panel.
The engine compartment presents very well with finishes and details consistent with factory specifications. The front frame appears to be finished with the original white paint and bears the matching serial number stamped on the picture frame segment. The finishes, hardware, and details are reflective of original production standards though now showing signs of age, here too, ideal for driving enjoyment without the fuss of concours perfection. The original numbers matching block and head are in place and the 4-speed manual transmission is also believed to be original to this car. As one might expect, the undercarriage is in excellent condition, with all structural panels sound throughout and virtually no signs of damage to the factory floors, The legendary Jaguar independent rear suspension and inboard rear brakes are in excellent condition and the stainless steel exhaust system is a welcomed enhancement to the sound of the twin cam six with the added aspect of longevity compared to standard steel exhaust.
Nestling into the cockpit and turning the key, this XKE roadster starts, runs, and drives quite well. Acceleration is brisk and nicely matched to the 4-speed manual gearbox. The car rides smoothly and brakes evenly even when coming down from highway speeds. The balanced steering, smooth operating clutch, and delightful gearbox make for excellent driving manners.
Highly prized for their legendary beauty and performance prowess. Jaguar XKE Series I cars with 4.2 engines are considered among the best-built combinations conceived by Jaguar Motors. Combining known long-term California ownership and enjoyable finishes, this Jaguar is sure to capture the heart of any vintage motoring enthusiast.
