Description

2001 Chevrolet Corvette C5-R
s/n C5R-007
Teamcar Racing Livery

After decades of arm’s-length involvement racing Corvettes, Chevrolet created its own race team in 1998 to showcase the new C5. Built by Pratt & Miller Engineering, after a season of program development in 1999, the C5-R was from the start a purpose-built race car utilizing the most advanced technologies and materials available.

The C5-R initially used a 366 CI V-8 engine based on the production car’s LS1. This was replaced later in the 1999 season with a 327 CI engine built by Katech Engine Development. Developing a reliable 650+ horsepower, the Katech 427 became the standard engine in the C5-R. From 2002 Hewland’s most advanced sequential 6-speed transaxle was used to redistribute the weight of the driveline from front to rear, new rules in the international endurance community allowed for carbon on carbon brakes, and bodies were fabricated from carbon/Kevlar materials. In short, Pratt Miller’s C5-Rs were, when new, among the most advanced big bore GT machines on the planet, and with generous financial backing from the factory, proved to be a dominating force winning multiple championships in the American Le Mans Series and in Europe, taking victories at Le Mans, Daytona, Sebring, and beyond.

During their core years of success, only the now-haloed Prodrive Ferrari 575 Maranellos were able to log victories against the C5-Rs in the ALMS. In total, Pratt & Miller C5-Rs earned 31 class victories in the American Le Mans Series alone, including a set of victories in the 12 hours of Sebring and Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. The C5-Rs earned a trio of class wins at the 24 hours of Le Mans, and an overall victory in America’s premier endurance racing prize, the 24 Hours of Daytona. Four consecutive American Le Mans series championships were achieved on North American soil, while factory built customer campaigned C5-Rs mounted concurrent success in Europe.

A primary contributor to this European success was the car offered here, C5R-007. Initially constructed over the winter 2001, after being used as a backs and test car, in 2003 Pratt & Miller supplied C5R-007 to Patrick Selleslagh, the owner of SRT Racing in Belgium for use in the Belcar series. This would start a long relationship between SRT Racing and Corvette Racing as future Pratt & Miller Corvette Race cars were also purchased by SRT Racing. C5R-007 competed from 2003 through to 2007 with SRT Racing. At the end of the 2007 season SRT Racing sold C5R-007 to Alexander Talkanista of AT Racing to compete in the 2008 FIA GT series.

Raced in dozens of Belcar and FFSA French GT Championship events, the 24 hours of Spa in Belgium, and later in rounds of the FIA GT championship, C5R-007, no less than six class victories, with a further 6 podium results are credited to this chassis during its period competition career. During these events, 007 was piloted by some of the great GT and Sports car drivers of the time to include Marc Goossens, Marc Duez, Christophe Bouchut, Jan Heylen and David Hart.

Following its contemporary racing career, 007 was purchased by the consignor- a recognized expert in the realm of modern GT racing machines- and comprehensively restored to period specification and the recognizable Teamcar livery. The restoration is diligently documented in photography and the car has seen only one track outing since, and the 80th Goodwood Members Meeting where it was driven for exhibition purposes by GT racing great Marino Franchini.
