Description

1934 Packard Twelve with LeBaron Re-body to Sport Phaeton Styling
s/n 901982
Dark Blue with Tan Interior

Among the first manufacturers to offer a twelve cylinder engine (available starting in May of 1915), Packard was always well known for producing luxurious and glamorous cars. Though they switched briefly to building only eight cylinder cars in the late 20`s, the top of the range for most of the 30`s was the Twelve. Featuring a 7.3 liter 67 degree V-12, they were powerful and expensive, and consequently, just 5744 would be built by 1939. Like most expensive cars of the period, many were fitted with custom bodies, and a select few were fitted with particularly glamorous bodies. Just three examples were originally fitted with this stunning dual cowl Sport Phaeton body by LeBaron, which when new, would have sold for a princely $7,065 against $4,185 for a factory sedan, and about $6,000 for a house. This particular example started life as a less glamorous Packard Twelve, and has been re-bodied to emulate the legendary Sport Phaeton bodywork.

The level of craftsmanship throughout is very high indeed, and this car stuns with its incredible presence. It is very fresh cosmetically, with excellent lustrous paint, and high quality chrome. The body is very straight and the panel fits excellent. There are a handful of paint blemishes in the form of chips in common places (such as around the bonnet opening) and a handful of small areas of cracking. The car is otherwise extremely fresh. The Solar headlamps are nothing short of stunning, and the other details contribute to a top drawer presentation. The pinstripes are hand-applied, the period California license plates restored, and the various badges and lights are excellent.

The interior is equally stunning and fresh, with high quality materials and superlative detailing throughout. The level of workmanship is very high as well. The leather and carpets are excellent, and all components have been restored, from the pedals to the instruments, to the burled dash, shift knob, and steering wheel. The rear compartment is equally nice, and there are seatbelts fitted as well.

The engine compartment and trunk have also been restored to extremely high standards, and are spectacular. Particularly the engine, which retains the correct finishes and hardware, is in wonderful condition, in addition to being spotlessly clean. The underside is very nice as well, with light wear and soiling only. The car runs very well also, with wonderfully smooth and silent operation from both the drivetrain and chassis.

This is an incredible opportunity to acquire a beautiful and rare car. With just three originally built, they are very rarely available and extremely expensive, and this car, done to a high standard, is thus a very attractive alternative, particularly at this price. Its restoration was done to the highest standards and remains fresh, and this car is ready to be enjoyed.
