1934 Rolls-Royce 20/25 Sedanca Drophead Coupe by Ranalah
s/n GLB15, engine no. R6A
Two-Tone Deep Red with Beige Leather Interior
Introduced in 1929 to replace the 20 H.P., the 20/25 was Rolls-Royce`s new small model. Introduced to answer critiques of the 20 being too slow, the 20/25 featured and enlarged version of the excellent six cylinder engine, and an updated version of its robust chassis. The 20/25 was continuously developed, with increases in compression ratio resulting in more power by 1932. Synchromesh was fitted on top and third gears in 1932 as well, demonstrating the philosophy behind Henry Royce`s famous quote: `Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it.`
This matching numbers example features a stunning and unique Ranalah body, and may be the very first Ranalah produced. It was originally delivered to John Charles bodyworks, and is one of only two cars delivered there. It comes with a great deal of documentation including the build sheets from Rolls-Royce, which confirm its provenance, and trace the ownership of the car from new until 1960. The car was originally fitted with several features and its original owner was in Paris. In more recent years, the car received $203,060 in restoration work performed over several years, and finished in 1995. The car went on to win best in class at the Rolls-Royce Owners Club Centennial event held at Pebble Beach in 2004, a testament to the quality of the work performed. The car comes with hundreds of pages of documentation and receipts for work performed. This includes the restoration and maintenance since, including several thousand dollars spent in 2005, when the engine was detailed, and various small jobs performed. This included servicing the cooling system, including new spring in thermostat to control radiator blinds, and various small jobs associated with keeping the car in top condition.
Cosmetically, the car is in excellent shape. The panels are extremely straight, and the paintwork was completed to very high standards. There are a handful of surface imperfections, but nothing that significantly detracts from the overall appeal of the car. The chrome is very nice as well, with light haze only. The glass and lamps are excellent, while the wheel discs are very highly polished and lovely.
The interior is also very nice with the light patina, throughout, particularly to the leather. The carpets are high quality materials and are excellent. The dashboard and other wood trim are excellent, with light wear only. The instruments and switches are excellent, and the top is in fine shape, though the straps to hold it place when it is configured as a sedanca are missing.
The trunk and engine compartment are very tidy as well and were included in the restoration. The engine had much detailing work performed in 2005 and remains both correct and in very nice cosmetic condition. The trunk is upholstered to match the interior and is very tidy.
The underside is very clean and solid, and the car runs very well. It starts almost immediately, and idles smoothly and quietly. It drives very well and feels sorted
This is a very unique opportunity to acquire a stunning and rare 20/25. It has a unique body and is in excellent condition, fit to show regionally or use on special occasions. It is a superbly documented, matching-numbers example, beautifully restored example that is ready to enjoy and is sure to bring much pleasure to its new owner. The restoration costs along greatly exceed our asking price making this wonderful example an outstanding value as well.
