Description

1935 Aston Martin 1 ½ Liter Mk II Third Series
S/N: A5/541/L, Engine no. G5586L
Dove Grey with Red leather

More of a club and a way of life than a profit making concern, Aston Martin has always held a special place in the hearts of Englishmen since its founding. The company’s motto might have well been “race team and financial ruin” along with a large dash of design flair.

Aston Martin seemed to change owners more often than designs. While the arrival of A.C. Bertilli in 1926 did bring some discipline to the design and construction of its various models, the company continued along a precarious financial path and never had the capital resources to be more than one car delivery ahead of bankruptcy through the late 1950’s.

Even in recent years as Aston Martin has become a slick entity with a purpose built facility and ever more sophisticated marketing schemes the truest image of a British sports car is not an Eight Litre Bentley or a MG Midget; it is a 1930’s Aston Martin that an Englishman sees in his dreams.

The final and best expression of the 1 ½ liter design, the Mk II is the most developed and refined car of the series and as such is an ideal car for tours and rallies. 1 of 61 of only four seaters built. With its low, sporting, open Feltam bodywork, cycle fenders and outside exhaust this Aston Martin offers all that people think of when conjuring up a 1930’s sports car.

This particular Mk II has been owned and enjoyed by one dedicated Texas family from 1955 until just recently. It appears to be correct and complete and runs extremely well. The body is in good structural condition with solid doors and straight metal work, albeit with paint actually falling off in places. The interior is very nice with unmarked red leather. The dash is especially good with gleaming and functional instruments. The chromed headlights, windshield frames, handles knock-offs and trim throughout are bright and un-corroded. Both the engine bay and chassis are in clean and good condition. The car is fitted engine no. G5586L, which is of the proper type and age.

D L Dixon’s 1950 Madresfield Concours winner and when recently shown at a major show the car was well received and much appreciated. Besides enthusiastic ownership and clubs the marque is well supported by specialist suppliers allowing the car to be used in the manner its creators intended. BBP 79 is seen in Michael Fostick’s book “Aston Martin and Lagonda”, page 109.
