Description

Engine No: 4EDA 52 10435UK Registration No: EPF 97The HRG is a highly successful production sports car, built both pre and post war, which had clear similarities with the chain driven Frazer Nash, as Archie Frazer Nash had been in partnership with HR Godfrey, the latter being one of the founders of the HRG company. The pre-war car has a Meadows 4ED engine and conventional transmission and is lighter than the Frazer Nash, having really excellent steering, brakes and other road characteristics. This car is the second production HRG out of a total of only 16 Meadows engine cars made by the factory. It was built to the order of Archie Scott who competed in the car during the 1937 season with considerable success: Le Mans 24 Hours13th overall, 2nd in class. (Co-driver EA Halford) Donnington 12 Hour race - 7th in class (co-driver EA Halford) Tourist Trophy Race - Retired (co-driver St. John Horsfall) Monte Carlo Rally - No marks lost, 32nd overall, 9th in classRAC Rally - 26th in classMCC Edinburgh Trial - Premier awardBrooklands and Donnington -again later in year. The car was sold to a John Weatherhead who completed in club events in the UK until 1951. It was the sold again and was rarely sighted until being found in Wales in 1989, in unrestored condition, by the well known and respected HRG Club registrar and author, Ian Dussek who commenced a comprehensive rebuild. This work was completed in 1996. The engine has been totally rebuilt in mid-2003. A new steel crank and con-rods have been installed together with an improved camshaft and other sensible modifications. Maximum power is produced at 5200 revs. The car ran in stripped form for the 1937 Le Mans event. Cycles wings were fitted, special headlamps, a Notek spotlamp and a wire mesh windscreen. The car is currently in this form but the standard wings windscreen, headlamps, hood frame and hood etc., will all be included in the sale. There are an increasing number of exciting special events being run at Le Mans (and other venues) where it?s essential to have a car with significant competition history in order to be successful in obtaining an entry. This car provides an excellent opportunity to obtain a very sporting car with excellent provenance which will certainly provide a passport to many of these race meetings and rallies.
