1938 Dodge D8 Sedan
s/n D842308TS
Blue with Tan Cloth Interior
In 1938, the price for a Dodge D8 Trunkback Sedan was $910, and consequently, Dodge sold no less than 73,417 examples between 1937 and 1939. Today, the D8 represents excellent value as an inexpensive, fun, and reliable American motoring icon. You would be hard pressed to find a comparable car in similar mechanical and cosmetic condition within the same value bracket.
This example was sold in California in 1938, as a 1938 year model, and still wears its original 1938 issue yellow California license plates. It was equipped from new with both a heater and radio, and both are still in the car today. It has been the subject of an older, minimally invasive restoration to insure it remained in good, solid, driver condition all its life. Having remained in California`s snow free, salt free climate all its life, there has been no history of rust or rust repair. There is no evidence of accident or accident repair anywhere to the body or underside.
Many years ago the car saw a fair repaint in a color which looks to be close to original. It makes a good impression of a clean car, but up close, small dings and scratches are apparent, mostly around the bumpers. The Chrome has been redone, and is again showing some age, but there is no significant deterioration to it. The body is straight, with excellent gaps and crisp door shuts.
The interior has seen a good `driver` quality restoration. The seats were reupholsersted, carpeting replaced, and dash and window veneer tastefully painted in an amateur version of a wood-like pattern. The beautiful deco-style gauges are in good unrestored condition, as is the stainless interior trim. The headliner looks as though it may be original, and is in very good shape all things considered.
The current owner has changed the oil pan gasket and differential gasket, performed a general service, and replaced the fuel pump.
The car is easy and relaxing to drive. It runs strong and feels tight. The 87hp, 217ci motor supplies more than enough power to comfortably cruise with modern traffic. The brakes are amazingly effective, suggesting that they have been recently overhauled, although we have no receipts to prove this. Occasionally, it will pop out of second gear under deceleration, but the car does go into and out of all three gears. The clutch disengages with the correct travel, and all the gauges work. It would make a great `round town` car, or characterful and inexpensive entry in classic rallies such as the California Mille. It is plenty fast enough to keep up, and seats five, with loads of trunk space. Imagine the possibilities...
