Being the short wheel base and lighter version of the Series 62 Coupe which was subsequently produced, the Series 61 was the model campaigned by Cadillac at the 24 hour of Le Mans and other endurance tests of speed and reliability.
Very few of the Series 61 Cadillacs were originally delivered with the three speed manual transmission as this car was. Further, very few cars have remained so cosmetically unmolested and orginal. This car has been in Northern California all its life, and there is no rust anywhere on the car.
Some slight modifications have been made to this car to improve its drivability in tours, rallies, and vintage competition events. The motor has been rebuilt to 200 hp and fitted with a big Edelbrock carburetor. The mufflers were removed creating a straight exhaust setup. The rear axle ration was changed from 3.77 to 3.36. A big front sway bar was fitted to improve handling, and air scoops added to assist in the cooling of the massive brake drums. The car is neither too hot, nor too loud to enjoy on the street, and frankly, is all the more drivable because of the changes.
The current owner has owner the car for approximately 12 years and had all this work done. He used it several times on the 1,000 mile long California Mille, in HMSA and CSRG vintage races, and in the 2,400 mile long La Carrera Panamericana road race from Guatemala to Texas. The car is event proven.
The majority of the interior is completely original and showing moderate patina. The headliner is discolored around the edges, but not sagging. The dash metal, steering wheel, flooring, interior chrome, and door jams are all orginal and holding up well. The gauge cluster has been replaced because the orgional was faded. The front and rear seats, and door cloth have been reupholstered and show minimal wear. Racing legal lap belts have been added.
The car has seen a high quality repaint several years ago in its orginal color. There are several minor cosmetic flaws in the bumpers, paint, and exterior chrome, but for the most part the car shows well. Lots of Carrera Panamericana decals have been added as the car was a participant in 1997, winning the Drum Brake class. Most of the decals are stickers, but some are painted. Leather hood straps have also been fitted, adding to the Carrera ambiance of the car.
The engine and trunk area are both nicely detailed. With the car is the full size spare, the hub caps and rear wheel skirts which have been removed for competition events. Currently the car sits on new Michelins in the front and new Pirelli P400s in the rear.
