1951 Ferrari 340 America bodied by Ghia s/n 0150A Red with Tan Interior and Red Accents Serial number 0150A was built for Tony Paravanno and driven to fifth place over all in the internationally acclaimed Carrera Pan Americana road race by Jack and Ernie McAfee. The car was specially prepared by Ernie McAfee for this event with Halibrand magnesium wheels, special magneto ignition, the unique brake ducts which are seen on the car today, larger drilled and vented brake drums, a high performance blue printed motor, and a larger radiator. The 5th place finish was a fantastic achievement for a non-factory entry and testament not only to the durability of this 340 America, but also to the driving and preparation skills of the McAfee`s. After the 1953 Mexican Road Race, this chassis was raced at Torrey Pines in 1952, driven by Bill Pollack, and again at the San Diego Cup Race of 1953. Very few Ferraris can boast both racing and concourse history. After having been in extended storage in Covina, California, Gordon Thomas unearthed this car and commissioned a comprehensive restoration to show standards. The restoration was both cosmetic and mechanical. This was a work in progress for some time and was finally finished for the 1994 Ferrari National tour where it gathered awards left and right. In addition to Ferrari club events, this car was shown at Pebble Beach, perhaps the world`s most prestigious concourse. The Thomas` continued to show the car, mostly in Southern California, winning awards up until 2000. Mr. Thomas ultimately passed away in 2005, and Fantasy Junction handled the sale for the estate to the current, bringing a nearly 30-year ownership period to a close. The achievements and ownership history of this car are undoubted, which is not often the case for Ferraris with racing history from this era. Very few miles have been logged since the restoration, and the condition of the car remains stunning. The paint work, body panels, and chrome are all near perfect. The lovely cloth interior is impeccable and the engine compartment and underside are both 100% accurate, authentic, and fully detailed. The car sits on nicely polished Borrani wire wheels. Mechanically the car is excellent with much recent attention to detail by Tony Nicosia and Patrick Ottis. The car is fully tuned and sorted, ready for any classic car event from the Monterey Historics, to the Mille Miglia, to the Colorado Grand. This car has recently been given FIA papers such that it is ready for competition in Europe. Yet another feature which sets this car apart from others of the era is Ghia`s unique detailing. The sleek, understated lines of the body are complemented nicely by the trademark hide-away door handles, and tapered tail lights which disappear into the rear fender profile. The cloth interior is unique, and along with the simplistic, functional dash, gives this car a one-off feel. With the car comes a copy of the factory build sheets, articles and period photos of the car, and all the trophies and concourse awards which this exceptional piece of history has won.
