Description

1952 Alvis TA 21 Drop Head Coupe by Tickford s/n 24641 Duotone Grey with Red Leather The TA 21 was Alvis' last completely new car design to reach production. The TA 21 featured many standard Alvis design characteristics, and was equipped with Independent front suspension, by coil springs and wishbones, and telescopic dampers front and rear. The chassis was lighter and more rigid that earlier cars. The TA 21 was fitted with Hydraulic brakes by Girling with twin leading shoes at the front. The 3.0 litre engine carries conventional valve gear with pushrods overhead, driven by chain from the rear in time honoured Alvis fashion. Light springs hold the pushrods in permanent contact with the rockers in the interest of silence. One of the more important updates to the post-war Alvis was the introduction of the all syncromesh four speed making the TA21 infinitely more usable in modern day traffic. The Tickford three position drop head coupe is generally considered the most attractive of the bodies supplied in-period and are consequently the most collectable. Today Alvis` are quite rare, especially Stateside, and are eligible for a growing number of tours, shows and other events catering to motoring enthusiast and collectors. This particular car is best described as a fantastic looking example with reasonably good mechanicals, but with moderate corrosion in the floors. With the capability to hold four passengers comfortably, and a fully retractable top, the Alvis DHC by Tickford offers pre-war charm and post war technology, all at a fraction of the cost of Rolls Royce or Bentley from the same era. The car was repainted just a few years ago and shows very nicely. The vinyl soft top is fully functional in all three positions, and is free of any major defects. It is very likely that all the chrome has been redone in recent years as it is free of any significant pitting or deterioration. The exterior mirror glass on the right side has been broken. The car sits on very nicely restored period correct wheels. The interior has the charming patina of a very well kept original car. The front and rear seat leather looks and feels original, and is free of tears and holes. The vinyl door upholstery has been replaced at some point and is also very nice. The dash and door trim wood is good, and the carpets are fair. All the original gauges and switches remain, including a period AM-FM radio. Mechanically the car is good. Much recent work has been performed in the last two hundred miles. This work included rebuilding brake and clutch master cylinders, replacing the soft brake lines, rebuilding the wheel cylinders, rebuilding the carburetors, replacing the wheel studs and nuts, and installing new brake shoes. The clutch was replaced and flywheel resurfaced. The radiator was re-cored, and the ignition coil, points, and spark plugs were are changed. Over $8,000 has been spent in the last two hundred miles! Today the car is running and driving unit. We cannot stress enough what excellent value this car represents as an affordable, charming, pre-war styled convertible. With the car comes one box of hard-to-come-by extra bits and pieces which will prove helpful to the new owner and records for the current ownership period.
