Description

1953 Lotus Mark VI s/n 46, engine no. 21646 Polished Aluminum with Red Interior The Mk. VI is the first Lotus to be built in quantities greater than two, and was the first Lotus to not use any Austin 7 parts. Available in kit form, a bit more than 100 examples were built, and they were effectively the direct predecessor of the famous Seven. The cars featured full rear fenders, which Colin Chapman later eliminated on the grounds that they were too expensive, and the cars were usually fitted with MG engines and gearboxes. This particular car is fitted with an MG TD engine and MG TC gearbox, and has been sympathetically but comprehensively restored by Vintage Machine Works out of Betel, CT to extremely high standards, while also remaining period correct. There is comprehensive photographic documentation depicting the complete restoration of every component, from the frame to the drivetrain to all major systems and accessories. The car was taken down to a bare frame, and all components renewed. The car was rewired, and all original components were restored, rather than replaced, when possible. The modifications originally specified by the Lotus documentation were performed, including shortened torque tube, fitment of panhard rod, and conversion to hydraulic brakes. The engine was rebuilt as well, with billet forged camshaft, Carrillo connecting rods, and Neufiled pistons. The displacement is 1500cc and the carburetion is by twin SU units, as would have been originally fitted. The car`s early history is unknown, though its history since its importation from the United Kingdom in 1981 is well known. It was raced during the 1980`s, and stored during the 1990`s and comes with old logbooks. The current owner had the car professionally restored during 2004 and 2005. At this time, the chassis was found to be stamped as `76`, though for registration purposes in the state of California, the car was issued identification number CA861852. The car has undergone review by CSRG and has been granted provisional acceptance by the Board of Directors. The car itself is in excellent order, with lovely polished aluminum bodywork. There is one dent in the right rear fender but the body is otherwise free from significant damage. The trim and lights are excellent, including the correct Lucas headlamps. The visible suspension and brake components are detailed and very clean, while the wheels are of the correct 15-inch size. The interior is very clean, with period Jaeger, Lucas, and Smiths instrumentation that is correctly laid out as shown in the original Lotus sales literature. The red leather upholstery (trimmed by Automotive Restorations) looks smart with the cream piping and is in excellent condition. A full roll bar with six-point Simpson harness is fitted, as is a halon fire extinguisher. The engine compartment is very clean, highly detailed, and the level of craftsmanship is very high. There is an electric fan fitted, as well as an oil cooler. The brake lines are braided stainless steel items. The rear compartment is very nice as well, and reveals a Fuel Safe fuel cell (manufactured in 2005, with 5 year warranty), which was renewed as part of the restoration as well. The underside is in similar condition, being well restored, detailed, and very clean. This car would make an excellent vintage racer. Its rarity, superb documentation, and high-quality restoration make is an appealing example, as does the fitment of the necessary safety equipment. The car has been thoughtfully and inobtrusively updated as well, to ensure reliable and safe operation, while the street registration also allows for the occasional weekend jaunt as well.
