Description

1954 Alfa Romeo 1900 CSS 5 Window by Touring S/n AR1900 01774, Engine No. 2072 Dark Blue with Red Interior Just 949 `Five Window` 1900 Alfa Romeos were built by Touring between 1951 and 1954. All the Five Window 1900s were built with the desirable and lightweight aluminum `Superleggera` body, and this car has been retrofitted with a 5 speed floor shift transmission. It is best described as a well kept `driver`, which has never been totally disassembled and restored. It is believed that this car was a longtime resident of Southern California before being exported to Sweden in 1990. The current owner bought it in 2004 and re-imported the car at that time. This car has seen recent and fairly high quality paintwork. It appears to have always been dark blue. There is some minor overspray in the jams, but the overall visual impression is that of a clean, fresh car. There is some deterioration in the chrome wheel centers, door handles, and side mirror, but on the whole, the brightwork is very good. The windows are free of cracks, but the rear side windows are Plexiglas, and the windshield has some light pitting and wiper marks. The car sits on Borrani wire wheels with period correct Michelin X 165-4.0 tires. The interior also makes a nice impression with excellent cloth headliner, door panels, and seat inserts. The front and rear seat upholstery is presentable, with no tear holes, or wear marks. The carpets are very good throughout, with much of the floor sections having just been replaced. The painted dash shows some blend lines. The original gauges show discoloration and fading appropriate for the car`s age. A tasteful Speedpilot chronometer set has been added to the passenger`s dash. The interior is set off nicely by the very rare and desirable Nardi flat wood steering wheel. The engine compartment is reasonably clean, but not detailed. The engine itself is correct for a 1900 (although from an earlier car), and is equipped with two twin throat down draft Solex carburetors with velocity stacks. Like the engine compartment, the trunk is presentable, but not detailed. In the trunk is the spare Borrani wire wheel. Mechanically, the car deserves a comprehensive service and prep before its first event. We performed a compression check with the car arrived and all for cylinders showed 165 pounds of compression. The engine runs strong and sounds great. The gearbox is smooth, with good second gear synchro, but the throw out bearing makes some noise. Not all of the lights work, nor do the wipers. The oil temp sender is no longer working, and the water temperature gauge is also not operable. Currently the car runs and drives. These items are all minor, and symptomatic of any car of this age. This 1900 is eligible for many of the World`s premier historic car rallies such as the Mille Miglia and the California Mille. It is nice enough to look sharp up close, but not so nice that you should hesitate to drive it.
