Description

1954 Ferrari 250 Europa
s/n 0343EU
Green Metallic with Butterscotch Leather Interior

Developed as a luxurious touring model, the 250 Europa was an elegant and sophisticated road car that wore what is regarded to be the first standardized Ferrari body. Using a 110-inch wheelbase and simple yet beautiful styling by Pininfarina, the car was motivated by Ferrari`s famous 3-litre V-12. Just 18 examples of the Europa were built with this Pininfarina body, and they remain collectible and desirable examples of these relatively early Ferraris. Thanks to their early production dates, these cars are eligible for a great many events, including the Mille Miglia, California Mille, Colorado Grand, and many others.

This particular car received a nut and bolt restoration by Charles Betz and Fred Peterson at great expense to a spectacular level in 2004. Every component was restored or replaced with new parts, and the car seen limited use since. The engine was built by Bob Wallace and was dyno tested prior to installation in the car. Upon its completion, it was shown at Cavallino (where it won Platinum) and Pebble Beach (where it placed 3rd in class). It was also used on the Pebble Beach Tour as well.

Cosmetically, the car is of course stunning. The paintwork (done by Steve Beckman), chrome, and trim were all done to the highest standards, and the color combination remains nothing short of stunning, just as it would have been on the lawn at Pebble Beach. The level of the body preparation is truly extraordinary, with tight consistent gaps and excellent fit. The panels, particularly the doors, operate with a smoothness and delicacy that usually eludes freshly restored cars. The glass and lights are excellent as well, and the headlamps and auxiliary lamps are both Marchal items. There are a few wiper marks on the windscreen. Having been carefully used and stored since completion, there are no flaws of any significance.

The interior is equally stunning, with a striking level of craftsmanship that makes a Ferrari of ten or fifteen years later look generic and perhaps even a bit average. The instruments, dashboard, and upholstery feel truly special, which is enhanced by the striking color combination. The quality of the materials is absolutely first-rate, and the overall experience is hugely evocative. Also of note is that the interior is quite spacious, particularly in comparison with the later Ferraris.

The engine compartment and trunk have both been spectacularly restored and are of course spotless. They are also extremely correct in terms of finishes, materials, and hardware, as is required for cars that compete at this level. The underside is also spotless and beautifully detailed.

This is a very rare opportunity to acquire an extremely important and collectible example of this early Ferrari. It is almost impossible to fault and has been extremely well documented with several hundred photographs from during and after the restoration. These include thorough documentation from the restoration itself, and of the finished car and its appearance at Pebble Beach and Cavallino. The car also comes with its tool roll with tools and Borrani spare wire wheel. Presently, the car is a no-excuses example that is ready for its new owner to enjoy with great pride.
