1956 Alfa Romeo 1900C SS 3-Window by Touring
s/n AR1900C10205, Engine no. 1308*10224*
Blue Cobalto with Red and Grey interior
In 1950 when Alfa Romeo launched the 1900 series it would rapidly transform an already fast-moving company into unprecedented demand for their cars. By 1953 technical and performance advances were moving the 1900 into serious performance territory against much larger powered cars. Paired with different gear ratios and “Alfin” self-adjusting rear brakes, these CSS (also referred to as Tipo 2 or Series II) were formidable performers. Alfa Romeo boasted success in the Targa Florio, the Stella Alpina and the Coupe des Alpes, claiming the slogan “The Family Car That Wins Races”. Many of the finest Italian coachbuilders rebodied the 1900 in a range of stunning configurations, further cementing the 1900 as one of the leading platforms among European cars of the 1950’s.
Touring Coachworks employed their patented Superleggera (super lightweight) construction using a rigid body sub-structure enveloped by a light aluminum skin to form the stunning three-window coupe design. The light and airy upper canopy surrounds four passengers in a tight but open sporting GT, delivering on the promise of comfort and performance.
This example (serial number 10205) was delivered new to Messina, Sicily in 1957 where it appears to have been maintained for most of its life, remaining in the hands of only few owners. Around 1995 this Alfa went to Cosenza, Calabria where it was treated to a professional restoration in 1995 and 96, consequently achieved an ASI Gold Certificate. The car still retains the original engine as well as the correct factory exterior color (Blue Cobalto), according to Alfa Romeo historian, Marco Fazio (letter included with the car). This Alfa has been properly cared for over the past twenty years, as evidenced by the current condition and longevity of the restoration. In 2013, the previous owner had quite a bit of mechanical work performed to freshen it beyond the restoration. The current owner acquired the car in 2014 and immediately prepared it for the California Mille where it was accepted. The new owner then spent a considerable amount of money on the transmission, carburetors, fuel pump, brakes, and all other systems to ensure a safe and drivable car. As expected, the car performed without issue, not only for the 1000 mile event, but further flawlessly amassed an additional 1000 miles throughout several spirited weekend drives in Los Angeles along Pacific Coast Highway, and eventually from Malibu all the way to Monterey for 2016’s Car Week.
The car presents overall in very nice condition. The paint has settled in over the years since restoration and is now showing some areas of mild discoloration, road chips, a single paint chip at the cowl, and swirl marks from polishing. Maintaining a high gloss overall, the shine is very presentable and is more than adequate for events and general presentation. The chrome is in good condition, showing only mild scratching due to general polishing along the top surfaces of the bumpers. There is a small star burst on the left corner of the front bumper where chrome appears to have blistered. The trim around the glass area could benefit from polishing, but generally is in good condition. The doors, hood and trunk open and shut firmly. The headlights are in excellent original shape, boasting Carello branded lenses and proper stamping on the headlight trims. Amber colored tail lights are not crazed or cracked.
The interior is very nice, presented in contrasting red and light grey. This color combination nicely offsets the deep blue exterior. Interior overall is nicely maintained showing some signs of age but overall well cared for with no significant wear marks. Carpet shows minor heel wear and light soiling. Side window openings and rubber gaskets are worn and dry. The surrounding area has been poorly finished, but it is not immediately visible. Dashboard and accompanying instruments are wonderfully laid out displaying typical Italian flare in design color and featuring the wonderful flat Nardi steering wheel. Overall, the interior has settled in harmony with the exterior, making a very presentable top driver quality car.
The engine compartment is properly done with correct factory finishes that have become toned due to use. The various accessories under the hood are correct and, while showing patina, are nicely balanced with the overall cosmetic condition. Undercarriage shows no major signs of damage or significant issues, once again displaying condition and finishes consistent with an older but high quality restoration.
On the road, this 1900 delivers one of the finest period driving experiences you will find. Originally designed as a long-range touring car, many of the contemporary improvements in materials, sealants, and engine rebuilding have further improved the longevity of this innovative platform. The recent mechanical work done on this car gives confidence that one will not only enjoy spritely Italian performance, but reliability. The engine makes excellent power in all gears, moving in harmony with the suspension. Alfa Romeo 1900s are known to be resilient when properly and spiritedly driven. In the case of this 1900 the driver will be especially delighted by the performance and reliability experienced in both touring and casual driving. Of particular note is the ease and joy of this roomy interior. Unlike many other cars, driver and passengers can sit comfortably, engage in conversation, and access their personal items, easily stowed in the rear seating area. For vintage touring ease and contemporary marital harmony, it is hard to beat an Italian GT car.
This is a great opportunity to acquire an event-eligible Touring bodied Alfa Romeo with sound mechanical presentation and equally enjoyable visual presence. The combination of grace and performance, coupled with the contrasting elegant interior makes this 1900 a great event car. For those who admire hand made coachwork, spacious accommodation, state of the art engineering, and exciting driving, this Alfa Romeo 1900 CSS will handsomely deliver on the slogan of the 1950s “A Family Car That Wins Races”
