1956 Ferrari 250 GT Boano
s/n 0623GT engine no. 0623GT
Silver Blue Metallic with Black Roof and Parchment Leather Interior with Black Piping

Another important step toward standardizing the bodywork of Ferrari’s roadgoing production cars, the 250 GT Boano was introduced in 1956 to replace the Europa GT. Although styled by Pininfarina, the coachwork was initially built by Boano, a company that passed from Mario Boano to his son-in-law Ezio Ellena partway through production, resulting in the two appellations for what were essentially variants of the same car: the Boano and the Ellena. The Boanos are generally more desirable thanks to their elegant “low roof” configuration, which, in addition to the lower roofline, was also identifiable thanks to its quarter windows. Additionally, the Boano tended to be characterized by the occasional fitment of competition features in common with the Tour de France models, and indeed, some Boanos were even raced. In all, approximately sixty examples were built.

This matching-numbers example has a number of unique competition-oriented features, including dual master cylinders and aluminum case offset shift transmission with reversed shift pattern. The car also has larger brake drums and dual mechanical fuel pumps. The car was on the East Coast for many years, with evidence that the car was stateside since at least 1958. Its first owner was a fellow named Marc Merlin, and the car had found its way to the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area by 1964. It was owned by a police officer named Moe Sherid, who lived in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and had found its way to an owner named Mike Curley by 1974. It was then owned by a Leo Verhies for many years, and disassembled the car for restoration in 2000. It eventually found its way to the current owner who had the restoration completed.

From 2011 to 2013, the car was completely restored at the capable hands of Ross Coleman, previously the shop foreman at Wayne Obry’s Motion Products and now head of Alchemy Creations. The engine was rebuilt by Cliff Ebben, who also works at Motion Products. At this time, it was converted from the earlier style mouse trap valve springs to conventional valve springs. A stainless steel exhaust system was fitted, and the original was retained and comes with the car. All other mechanical systems were rebuilt, and the car was cosmetically restored in its entirety as well.

The car is in excellent shape, with virtually no mileage since the completion of the restoration. The workmanship is high quality throughout, with straight panels displaying excellent fit and gaps. The paintwork was done to high standards and is virtually unmarked. The chrome is in as new condition and the wheels have been beautifully restored and wear Dunlop Racing tires, which adds further to the competition tone set by the car’s lack of bumpers. The original bumpers, along with associated mounting hardware and patterns for where to mount it, are included with the car. The car has modern Hella H4 headlamps and correct Marchal fog lamps, all of which are in excellent order. The remaining glass is excellent as well.

The interior was beautifully restored with high quality materials. The leather is beautifully fitted as are the matching wool carpets. The black piping offsets the light upholstery and complements the black roof and dashboard. The attention to detail is superb throughout, with beautifully restored steering wheel and instruments, as well as correct heater and tinted sun visors. The headliner is correct wool and also displays excellent workmanship. The trunk has been restored to the same high standards as the interior.

The engine compartment is correctly restored and beautifully detailed. The car retains its matching numbers inside plug motor, which is fitted with triple carburetors and velocity stacks. The ancillaries are generally correct in appearance and nicely restored, with yellow fuel lines, FIAMM horn compressor, and decals on the various components. The car comes with its original airbox with new filter element.

This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire an extremely rare low roof Boano that has been beautifully restored. Just sixty were built, and this particular car is further distinguished by its unique competition features. Thanks to its build date, this car is eligible for the world’s most prestigious historic events, including the Colorado Grand and California Mille. Additionally, other Boanos have been used on the Mille Miglia Storica. The car comes with numerous crates of spare parts including spare windscreen, the original exhaust system, original bumpers, and extra upholstery material for the interior.
