In 1950 Alfa Romeo launched the 1900 series to the surprise and delight of automotive enthusiasts. Previous Alfas were built in limited number, so the all new unit body platform allowed Alfa to expand into larger production volumes with the flexibility to build sedans and coupes. The newly developed dual overhead cam alloy-head four cylinder had hemispherical combustion chambers, dual carburetors, and floor shift five speed transmissions. Among the models offered, the 1900 C Sprint and Super Sport coupes were the most sought after constructed with lightweight bodies by notable coach builders Ghia, Zagato, Pininfarina, Bertone and (in the case of this example) Touring.
The Superleggera (super lightweight) construction was Touring’s own patented process of construction which offered rigid body sub-structure enveloped by a light aluminum skin. In the case of this three-window example, the Milanese elegance is evident in the bright upper body afforded by the glass work and minimal pillar construction. The light and airy upper canopy is all the more beguiling as it conceals the capability of housing two additional passengers in the rear seating area.
This example (serial number 10522) has recently been treated to extensive mechanical and cosmetic work, resulting in an very well-sorted and beautifully presented example of the most desired CSS model. Noted expert Conrad Stevenson performed substantial mechanical improvements and service, applying his notable attention to detail over the course of the past three years. Stevenson fit the car with a new intake manifold and twin Weber carburetors. This system included a hand made custom airbox specially designed to accommodate twin Webers while maintaining an appropriate vintage look and installation. At the same time, all new exhaust was installed, the brakes were completely serviced and literally all suspension components and hardware were replaced including shocks, springs and bushings. Minor bodywork was completed with care given to properly repair formerly soft jack points and fortify the underside truck brace. All trim and chrome was carefully refined as needed.
The drive-train has been upgraded to a 2000 series motor and a floor-shift 5-speed transmission, resulting in both reliability and increased power. Extensive work was done to the head and internal components to ensure reliability and performance. An additional surprise was revealed during long touring events when the car returned an astonishingly high 26 mpg. The upgrades to the drive-train and braking proved to be rewarding, offering three flawless California Mille completions all within the past few years.
Cosmetically, the car is highly refined with an excellent interior, including stunning instrumentation adorned by a tightly stitched leatherwork recess across the dashboard, a gorgeous steering wheel, and richly contrasting leather seating. Although the seats are original construction and an older material, the look and feel is pleasantly nostalgic and clean. The new suspension offers very nice road feel and the generally pliant seats offer just the right amount of comfort when touring. The rear seat is rather roomy given the overall dimensions and is beautifully pleated in the original factory pattern.
The body is straight overall with very good panel fit in all areas. The paintwork reveals a nicely settled older respray with superficial stone chips in the front lower valance and undercut body areas. The chrome is in excellent condition throughout, showing no scratches and crisp rubber gasket lines. All garnish molding and chrome trim lines, door sill trim, and rocker panel trim are in keeping with the overall level of fit and high quality driver presentation. The lights and glass all present beautifully and operate as expected.
The engine compartment is consistent with the look and feel of the restoration featuring correct finishes, authentic parts, proper lines and materials, offering a uniform finish and slight patina resulting from recent use. The upgraded motor and transmission are beautifully represented in the engine compartment, completed with correct factory original stampings, VIN number, and original lubrication plate. Undercarriage presents rather well with wear evident in areas due to recent use.
The driving experience in this particular 1900 is perhaps one of the best you will find. The combined suspension and motor upgrades have literally transformed an already fine car into a wonderfully handling touring car. The engine makes excellent power in all gears, and moves in harmony with the fully redone suspension. Alfa Romeo 1900s are known for their willingness in corners when properly and spiritedly driven. In the case of this specific 1900 the driver will be especially delighted by the performance and reliability.
This is a great opportunity to acquire an event-eligible Touring bodied Alfa Romeo with professionally refined mechanical presentation and wonderfully drivable presence. The combination of exterior grace and road-going performance, coupled with delightful instrumentation and elegant interior makes this 1900 a great event car. For those who admire hand made coachwork, state of the art engineering, and exciting driving, this Alfa Romeo 1900 CSS will deliver ongoing rewards throughout your ownership experience.
