1957 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce Lightweight

s/n AR 1493.04067, Eng no. AR 1315.30393

Royal Swedish Blue with Biscuit Interior

This very special, time-warp Alfa fits all the parameters that today’s discerning buyer requires: world-wide event worthiness, rarity, provenance, originality, and condition.

One of just 100 built, this matching numbers, ultra low mileage Giulietta Sprint Veloce Lightweight is an absolute top quality automobile- both in terms of rarity and driving pleasure. Standard Giulietta Veloces are well regarded cars among Italian automotive enthusiasts, but Lightweights are the holy grail- equipped with alloy door/lids, alloy door window frames, alloy `wing` above the license plate, Plexiglas side and rear windows, ribbed trunk floor, magnesium oil pan & air intake `box`, rear seat delete, and twin Weber 40DCO3 carburetors.
As per Archivio Storico Alfa Romeo, this fantastic example was manufactured on March 11, 1957; shipped to Bonniers (Joachim Bonnier`s family dealership), Bilakbiebolac Stockholm on March 14, 1957. It was special ordered painted in Royal Swedish Blue with chrome bumpers, covered glove box, extra carpet around base of seats, cigarette lighter, fabric on dash top and instrument cluster, heater, and a fuel tank protection plate.
Ownership history for this example is well known from new:
May 4, 1957: Crown Prince Wilhem of Sweden, Kung. Slottet, Stockholm; confirmed by copy of Swedish Registration Form. Prince was over 60 years old at the time of delivery.
September 6, 1957: Karl Harald, Kronegord, Stockholm
November 5, 1957: Jan Olsson, Taby, Sweden
August 6, 1959: Gunnar Leander, Kalmar, Sweden
August 23, 1995: Lars Edvard, Nettersio, Rockneby, Sweden
August 4, 1997: Lars Erik Larsson, Oxie, Sweden
November 15, 2002: Alan Frick, Pasadena, California
May 31, 2008: Sold to current owner, California
The car remains a fundamentally unchanged, ultra original car in its original colors, and with completely original interior. It is a remarkable time capsule in terms of preservation. It is known as the “gold standard” for being the most original/lowest mileage example existent. The car has been repainted about 9 years ago, and looks stunning. The body is straight with outstanding panel match and, with the exception of one small area behind the left front wheel, no evidence of damage or repairs. The chrome appears to have been selectively refinished at the time of the repaint and has a fantastic luster. All the original Plexiglas, glass, and lenses (including the virtually impossible to locate Carello headlights and Marchal driving lamps) are in outstanding condition.
The interior is marvelously original and in the very best condition that could be expected considering the car is now 51 years old and only 20K miles! The carpet, headliner, gauges, switches, knobs, seats, and door panels are all absolutely as delivered. The rubber trunk mat has been refreshed, and a modern dry cell battery installed with a proper hold down to increase the reliability and user friendly nature of this car for events.
The engine bay was repainted with the balance of the car, and shows all the signs of methodical detailing to original specifications where work has been performed. Many of the ancillaries which have not been restored such as the brake reservoir and vent hose display a light patina in keeping with the cars original condition. The underside is detailed in similar fashion where work has been performed, but otherwise untouched and original.
The current owner has performed much recommissioning work, done by Scott Gray, to ensure that car is in top form- ready for events or for preservation concourse showing. The car has been meticulously detailed inside and out. Five new period typical new tires are fitted, the radiator was serviced, carburetors rebuilt, fuel tank serviced, starter and generator overhauled, brake system rebuilt including master and wheel cylinders, and repairs to steering ball joint and idler arm. The differential was cleaned and resealed, and seat belts were installed for rallying. At the suggestion of The Collier Museum the engine was rebuilt to 1400cc specifications, and a more aggressive Pittatore cam installed. The overhaul was done using Arias pistons, a race detailed crankshaft, and new valves and springs. Alfa expert Dan Marvin treated the cylinder head to suit the new cam profile. Special heat-coat paint was applied to the exhaust headers. The engine was dyno tested before being reinstalled.
With this car comes the spare wheel with new tire, restored and correct jack, fantastic documentation, original owners manual and promo folder, and a few small original bits and pieces which have been set aside as work was performed.
Today the car shows just 32,294 kms, or just 20,000 miles. The car performs very well- as you would expect from a low mileage example. The rebuilt, matching numbers engine revs freely and pulls strong. The correct, early Giulietta transmission shifts smoothly and precisely.
This delightful factory Veloce Lightweight represents an unpretentious yet rare, reliable, ready-to-drive, and satisfying time-warp sportscar; eligible for virtually every important historic racing and rally venue around the globe including the Mille Miglia, Colorado Grand, and California Mille.
