The Giulietta, and later the Giulia are the cars that took Alfa Romeo from being a relatively small production company to being an economically viable and successful firm. Prior to that, they had produced large and expensive cars, and never in very large numbers. With the Giulietta/Giulia, however, Alfa Romeo produced significant numbers of these charming and capable cars. Its success was due in part to its unique placement in the market. It was neither a large hugely expensive car, nor was it very small utility car (such as the Fiat 500). Instead, they were affordable enough so that many could buy them, yet permitted a more glamorous and useful approach to motoring that really struck a chord with buyers on both sides of the Atlantic. The Giulietta Veloce enjoys the honor of being the highest performing and most developed open variant of the 1300cc line, thanks to its venerable twin cam engine, twin Weber carburetors, higher compression ratio, and hotter cam profiles. Performance was much improved over the standard cars.
This particular car is a genuine Veloce that was restored to very high standards by Giulietta restoration expert Randy Pene. He purchased the car in Halfmoon Bay, California and it was a running, driving car that had never been hit and was structurally excellent. The restoration included nearly every aspect of the car, and the result is a cosmetically and mechanically excellent car that could be driven or shown. The engine is a genuine Veloce engine manufactured in 1959 and the gearbox is a correct-type 4-speed which often goes missing from these cars.
The car presents extremely freshly and it is clear that the car has been used sparingly since the restoration was completed, about five years ago. The attention to detail and workmanship are excellent throughout. The body is straight and solid with great gaps and fit, especially the doors. The trunk lid sits a bit high, which is common on these cars because of the modern weatherstripping. The paint is nearly unmarked and the car has Carello headlamps and Pirelli Cinturato tires. The wheels and tires are excellent, as is the chrome trim, lights, and glass.
The interior was restored to the same high standards with new upholstery, carpets, and correct rubber floor mats. The dashboard was also renewed, including paint, chrome, switches, and instruments. The steering wheel has a handful of small marks but is very nice overall, and there is minor crazing to the horn button.
The engine is beautifully restored and is extremely clean. The radiator and air filter housing have been finished in glossy black paint, and the attention to detail is excellent, with Pirelli hose decals, correct silk screening, new hood pad, yellow fuel lines, correct hose clamps, and many other details. The trunk was treated similarly with correct new rubber floor mat, Magnetti Marelli battery, and paint sticker in place. The restored jack and spare are also present with the car.
This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a beautifully and correctly restored Veloce. A genuine 750F Giulietta Veloce, this example is also a great-running and driving example, with a well-resolved feel that is consistent with how these cars were originally delivered. It has not been hot rodded with a larger displacement engine, 5-speed gearbox, disc brakes, or anything like that. It’s just an authentic, honest and genuine 750F Veloce that is cosmetically excellent and ready to show or drive.
