Description

1957 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloce Spider
s/n AR1495 *01917*, Engine no. AR1315*30585*
White with Red Interior and Black Piping

The Giulietta, and later the Giulia are the cars that took Alfa Romeo from being a relatively small production company to being an economically viable and successful firm. Prior to that, they had produced large and expensive cars, and never in very large numbers. With the Giulietta/Giulia, however, Alfa Romeo produced significant numbers of these charming and capable cars. Its success was due in part to its unique placement in the market. It was neither a large hugely expensive car, nor was it very small utility car (such as the Fiat 500). Instead, they were affordable enough so that many could buy them, yet permitted a more glamorous and useful approach to motoring that really struck a chord with buyers on both sides of the Atlantic. The Giulietta Veloce enjoys the honor of being the highest performing and most developed open variant of the 1300cc line, thanks to its venerable twin cam engine, twin Weber carburetors, higher compression ratio, and hotter cam profiles. Performance was much improved over the standard cars.

According to internal Alfa Romeo documentation suppied by Marco Fazio, this 1957 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Veloce, s/n1495 01917, was manufactured on the 28th May 1957 as a US market car and sold on the 19th June 1957 to Hoffman Motor Car Co., New York, USA. The original body color was white, with red or black interior trim. It is a very early 750F, with matching numbers and original Veloce components. The original engine and head are in good running condition, and the car retains its original white with red interior color scheme. According to Fusi, only 50 Spider Veloces were made as 1956 and 1957 model years. These early cars (pre-1958) hold special value in that they are the only Spider Veloces that are formally eligible for a variety of classic events such as Mille Miglia, and they have the desirable early Giulietta styling with the shorter chassis and small tail lights.

This car was pulled from the estate of the deceased original owner in the late 1990s. Around that time it was then restored by a local Alfa Romeo mechanic and lived in his private collection for several years. According to the consignor, in 2006 this Veloce went into long term storage and did not see the light of day again until 2010. Just recently the Giulietta was put back on the road and registered in California.

The body condition is still quite presentable from the earlier restoration. The currently shown mileage of 37,000 and could be accurate, but is not verifiable. This car has had a slew of NOS and reproduction parts applied during and after the restoration in the 1990s, while maintaining all the key original aspects that make these cars so special.

The engine runs well with no smoke and good power. A rebuild at some point is highly suspected, but much of the paperwork was lost from the original owner. This car retains much of its original Veloce specific parts such as the ultra-rare Weber DCO3 carburetors, large aluminum oil sump, Veloce intake system, Veloce tachometer, Veloce intake grill scoop, Veloce finned aluminum drum brakes, Veloce tube headers, Veloce electric fuel pump, and Veloce-specific Borrani wheels. Wheels have been refinished with correct color and Borrani decals. They are fitted with brand new Vredestien sprint classic tires in the original size of 155SR15.

Included is the original early jack with wooden handle and original spare wheel/tire.

This example’s, early build date, attractive color combination, and outstanding specification will make it an appealing purchase for the Alfa enthusiast looking for an inexpensive, event eligible car, with an option to make minor cosmetic and mechanical improvements during his ownership.
