Circa 1958 Cherokee Quarter Midget

During the mid 1950s, quarter midgets emerged as a popular way for children to begin enjoying the thrills of racing. Using the new techniques of fiberglass manufacturing, many small manufacturers began producing shapely take-offs of the sprint cars and track cars that big boys drove. A slough of events to support these cars also emerged, with small dirt tracks complete with grandstands. Short of the considerable expense of the activity, it seems like the 1950’s car crazy equivalent of little league.

Manufactured by the Almond Automatic Equipment Company, the Cherokee quarter midget sold for $495 assembled, and boasted a 7.4 cubic inch 2hp continental engine. The periodadvertisement for the car also described the steel channel boxed frame, adjustable torsion bar suspension, and adjustable friction type shock absorbers. The ad also described the adjustable throttle position, and quick removable tail section.
