1957 Chevrolet Corvette Fuel Injected Roadster
s/n E57S101993 Engine Stamped No. FI22EL (Casting no. 3731548)
White with Silver Coves and Red Interior
Among the first generation Corvettes, 1957 was a very special year. The Corvette had received its first facelift the year before, which dramatically enhanced the success of the model, which had not been terribly successful up until that point. 1957 was marked by the introduction of an optional 283cid fuel-injected V8, which had the distinguished honor of being the first car to break the 1 horsepower per cubic inch mark. There were numerous other desirable options introduced around this time including tachometer, electric windows and 4-speed transmission. In total, just 1040 fuel injected Corvettes were built in 1957, and only 756 of those were rated 283hp.
The s/n decodes as follows:
57- Year model
S- St. Louis, Mo
101993-Production number
The following numbers appear on the various components of the car:
Engine block: On the driver’s side, at the rear, a casting number reads “3731548”. On the passenger’s side, at the front, a stamping reads “FI22EL”. This has almost certainly been re-stamped after the block was decked and should read F122EL, which would be a date code correct engine number for this chassis.
Transmission: This particular car was an early example delivered with a three speed manual, which has been upgraded to a 4-speed.
Distributor: On the driver’s side there is a tag reading Anderson Ind. Delco-Remy. Model number “1110905”.
Fuel Injection unit: On the driver’s side it is tag with serial number “1527”, part number “7014360”.
Generator: On the driver’s side there is a tag reading Anderson Ind. Delco-Remy. Model number 1102043.
This particular car has been the subject of a comprehensive restoration. While there are no actual invoices on file pertaining to the restoration, it is clear that the paint, chrome, interior and trunk upholstery, engine bay, and underside were all included in the process. Currently the car shows 1,134 miles on the odometer, which likely reflects mileage logged since the restoration work was completed. There is very little, if any, wear evident on the restoration work. The car has been carefully stored by its enthusiastic owner, as part of a thirty car collection. It appears to have never been driven in anything other than fair weather conditions since the work was completed, and has remained in California since at least 1980. This example retains its original Wonderbar Radio, and although it was originally optioned with a hard top, a convertible soft top and frame are also included in the sale.
The mechanical aspects of the car were most probably included in the restoration as well. The car starts easily and shows excellent oil pressure both when warm and cold. Fairly recently the brake hydraulic system was serviced as necessary, and the brakes operate well. The clutch, transmission, and balance of the driveline are also operating properly.
Wearing period California yellow plates, and sitting on wide whitewall tires, this factory supplied fuel injected Corvette Roadster represents outstanding value as a rare, restored car, largely correct in equipment, and accompanied by both the hard and soft tops.
