Description

1957 Mercedes 300SL Roadster s/n 198 042 7500090 engine no. 198 980 7500122 Red with Black Leather Interior The 300SL was one of the most exotic cars available when it was new. Directly descended from racing cars, and chock full of innovative features, they were fast, beautiful, and expensive. Arguably the first `supercar` ever the 300SL has been described as the McLaren F1 of its day. Surrounded by separate frame carbureted contemporaries, the SL was truly a glimpse of the future and remains today a very special car. Their appeal is timeless and consequently, they have remained `blue-chip` collector cars that are always in demand and perhaps even culturally embedded as one of the greatest cars of all time. The roadster version was for many years overshadowed by the stunning gullwing; however, as more savvy enthusiasts have become privy to the advantages of the roadster, their values are now catching up to those of the coupes. Indeed, the increased practicality of proper doors with wind-up windows, improved drivability from the revised rear suspension, and inimitable open air experience make the roadster a more enjoyable car to use than the gullwing. This particular example is an early production model that was restored in the late 1970`s. It has been in the care of the same owner since 1980, and appears to have covered only 3900 miles or so since having been restored. While the car makes a strong impression, it was not restored to the standards that would be expected of a car of this value today. Nevertheless, the car is intrinsically appealing for its honesty, and it is a matching numbers example that remains in its original color combination. Cosmetically, the car is attractive with a presentable paint job that shows a few blemishes upon close inspection. There are some cracks and areas that have been touched up but the body makes a positive impression overall thanks to its solidity and the fine panel fit. The chrome is very good throughout, with light pitting in selected areas only. The wheels are alloy rimmed and the tires are very good period Michelin XVS items. The rubber trim has expired in places but the glass and lights are very good. The interior is in very good condition with nice even patina throughout. The leather is just used enough to have patina, while the square weave carpets are excellent. The dashboard and switches are excellent as well. The top is in good condition with some mild yellowing to the rear window. The trunk and engine compartment are both in fine and very tidy condition. The engine compartment is quite clean. It has been sympathetically restored and remains extremely attractive. The trunk contains the jack, tire iron, and tool roll with tools. The underside is extremely clean as well, and very solid too. This is an opportunity to acquire a nice usable example of this important and iconic car. With the finest examples in the world in the mid $700,000 range, this car represents an opportunity to acquire a usable car that would be great for events at tremendous savings, or an example on which to perform anything from light restoration work to an all out restoration to world beating standards. With this example comes an unrestored jack, and a rather complete original tool roll with tools.
