Description

1957 Porsche 356A Carerra Coupe s/n 58918, Engine no. 620143 Silver with Red Leather Interior Porsche introduced the `A` version of the 356 just as it was coming into its own as a sports car manufacturer. They had just completed their 10,000th car, and with racing efforts gaining momentum, it was clear that Porsche was a force to be reckoned with. The model line was diversified to include a variety of body styles and engines, with the `Carrera` model topping the range. They were extremely expensive and rare when new, and continue to be highly sought after by collectors. The Carrera featured Porsches extremely sophisticated four-cam racing engine, which permitted over 100hp and 120mph. These motors, however, are impossibly complex, with rebuild costs well into five figures, easily exceeding the cost of a nice early 911. Thus, this car, with its tuned 356SC engine that also makes over 100hp, is a far less daunting car to own and use. Modifications to this engine include breathing enhancements, Weber carburetors, K&N air filter assemblies, MSD electronic ignition, and a sport exhaust. Aside from the engine, the car retains much of the original Carrera equipment, including the badges, speedometer, and tachometer. The car drives superbly and the brakes and transmission were just rebuilt at Aker`s, a shop specializing in Porsches. The car is finished in its original silver color and has a very well done and striking red leather interior, as was originally fitted to this car. It is a genuine `black-plate` California car and retains its original stamped hood, doors, and rear deck lid. It has been restored and is accordingly in excellent condition. The paint was recently renewed and is free from any damage. It is a high quality job in what is arguably the best color combination. The panel fit is very good across the board and all rubber trim is excellent, appearing to have been replaced when the car was repainted. All badges and present and in excellent order. The window chrome trim and bumper trim are very presentable but do show some minor scratching and haze. The remainder of the chrome (light surrounds, door handles, side mirror etc.) is excellent and appears to have been redone recently. The glass and lenses are all excellent, with the exception of some light vertical scratching to the driver`s window. The interior makes a fantastic impression. The quality of the leather and the installation are both top notch, and the car has been fitted with GT/Speedster seats. The interior is otherwise in its original configuration, including the Telefunken radio. The carpets and headliner are both original, fit superbly, and are in spectacular almost unmarked condition. The dash was repainted with the rest of the car, and all the knobs and switches are present, including those unique to the Carrera. The white bakelite switches and knobs are showing some cracking, which furthers the feel of originality present in the interior, and reflects the sympathetic nature of the restoration. The door jambs are well-detailed, and the German square-weave carpeting fits well and looks very smart. The chrome trim is generally very nice, and the headliner is excellent. The trunk is in nice tidy condition and reveals an Optima red top battery and spare with correct tie-down strap. The engine is in similar condition. While not detailed for show, it is very clean and presentable. The underside is an extremely strong point of this car. The floors are completely original and dry. No floorpans have been replaced, and the longitudinals are completely solid. The engine is dry and clean. The battery box has some ripples to it, and there is a seam visible from where the front clip appears to have been replaced. This is only visible from underneath the car, and inside of the trunk. The car is extremely good driving example as well. It is firmly sprung and extremely tight, and is really a joy to use. The car comes with the original Carrera oil tank, as well as the original driving handbook. This car represents a great opportunity to acquire one of these highly sought-after cars. In this configuration, the car is more usable, more drivable, more affordable, and as powerful as with the Carrera motor, making this an appealing way to enjoy one of these rare cars. Alternatively, with a correct 4-cam motor, this car would appreciate considerably and maintain the original legendary spirit and exclusivity of the `Carrera` line.
