Solid and Attractive MG A That Runs and Looks Great. Thoughtfully Upgraded and Well-Sorted.
1958 MGA Roadster
s/n HDL43/47160 Eng. no. 18V89OAEL 004041
Red with Black Interior
Introduced in 1955 to replace the MG TF, whose separate fenders had been current two decades earlier, the MGA was a significant step forward for MG. Retaining the key ingredients of MG's successes, namely stylish open two-seat bodywork, robust mechanicals, and lively handling, the MGA was quite successful. The separate frame now had the floors below rather than on top of structural members to lower the car's profile, while the B-series engine also permitted a much lower car. Selling for under 1000 pounds sterling new, the cars were affordable and sold well on both sides of the Atlantic, continuing MG's pattern of acting as an ambassador of sports cars, particularly in the United States.
This particular example is a structurally sound restored example that has been upgraded with an MGB engine, which runs great and improves the car’s performance. It was owned for many years by a committed MG enthusiast in the California Central Valley, who also had and MGC and MGB GT. The car was just serviced the highly regarded specialist David Nock (of British Car Specialists) and in May 2015, a new water pump and some brake work were performed. The consignor now reports that the car has no outstanding issues and certainly it runs and drives very well.
The car makes a strong cosmetic impression with glossy paintwork performed to very good standards. The panels are straight and fit well and the paint shows just a handful of small blemishes. The chrome is excellent throughout and the glass and lights are similarly nice. The car has a tonneau cover, in addition to side curtains and convertible top. The wheels are excellent as well.
The interior is in excellent shape overall, having been thoroughly restored. High quality wool carpets were fitted along with new black upholstery, both of which are in near-new condition. The dashboard was repainted and the instruments and controls are excellent. The car has a lovely wood-rimmed steering wheel and nice bright trim throughout. The door panels are also very nice.
The engine compartment is extremely clean and is nicely detailed, having obviously been restored. The firewall is tidy and was included in the restoration, as was the engine itself and the ancillaries. The appearance is period correct with period paper air filter housings still in place. The trunk is attractive, with carpeted spare tire cover but is otherwise painted. There is a jack and tool roll with tools present as well.
This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a solid and attractive MG A that runs and looks great. Thoughtfully upgraded and well-sorted, the car is an ideal example to drive and enjoy and comes with top, tonneau cover, side curtain, jack, and tools.
