Partially Restored Project Car
This car is 25 miles from Fantasy Junction and can be viewed by appointment.
A California black plate car, this example has been with one owner in storage in San Francisco since 1972. It is primarily a rust free example and will be the ideal restoration platform for its new owner. The engine runs and sounds tight with minimal smoke. The brakes are not stuck and the gearbox is functional. While much of the hard work has been done, it needs upholstery, some minor body work, paint, finishing, and assembly. Several random checks over time confirm that the car is almost 100% completed. We are only aware that the windshield, chrome strip for the hood, and one of two wiper blades are missing.
This car was owned for many years by San Franciscan architect Robert Mittelstadt, who began the disassembly and restoration process in 1972. The disassembly works was a careful and calculated process, and many of the lose components are labeled. Mr. Mittelstadt had all the chrome either replated or replaced, and duplicates of several smaller pieces are included in the sale of the car. New components include two of three gauges, a rear view mirror, taillight rings, headlight rings, door and interior panels, interior chrome pieces, and passenger`s seat upholstery. The bumpers, grille brows, grille, window pillars, and rocker panel trim, and top bows, have all been re-chromed.
The matching numbers engine was reportedly rebuilt to its original specifications in the 1970s and has basically no use since. The engine compartment has been painted black and is complete with the original and hard to find cast aluminum Veloce airbox. While not detailed, the engine compartment is presentable and is on par with a `driver`. The engine has been started recently, sounds good and runs well, and the gearbox is fully operable.
The body is straight and solid with just one very minor area of deterioration under the passenger`s seat. There is evidence or minor rust repair to the passenger`s door and minor accident damage to the left front headlight area. Some of the metal work has been performed and the car is ready for the final stages of priming and painting. The soft top will need to be reupholstered but the frame is in good condition. The car sits on stock, but unrestored steel wheels with period correct tires.
The interior chrome has been re-plated and the doors, side panels, and passenger`s seat reupholstered. The original gauges show moderate fading, but replacements have been sourced. There are no carpets or floor mats. The side windows are in good unrestored condition.
As a desirable Veloce model of the early Giulietta, this car represents an excellent foundation for a restoration to daily driver or show standards. Rough estimates to complete the project begin at $20,000. All the loose parts can be placed inside the car for export.
