1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloce Spider
s/n AR1495 F *05431*, Engine no. AR1315*31940*

The Giulietta, and later the Giulia are the cars that took Alfa Romeo from being a relatively small production company to being an economically viable and successful firm. Prior to that, they had produced large and expensive cars, and never in very large numbers. With the Giulietta/Giulia, however, Alfa Romeo produced significant numbers of these charming and capable cars. Its success was due in part to its unique placement in the market. It was neither a large hugely expensive car, nor was it very small utility car (such as the Fiat 500). Instead, they were affordable enough so that many could buy them, yet permitted a more glamorous and useful approach to motoring that really struck a chord with buyers on both sides of the Atlantic. The Giulietta Veloce enjoys the honor of being the highest performing and most developed open variant of the 1300cc line, thanks to its venerable twin cam engine, twin Weber carburetors, higher compression ratio, and hotter cam profiles. Performance was much improved over the standard car, and as is often the case with Italian cars, the later models are more technically developed.

This particular example is a genuine factory 1300cc Veloce. It is perhaps the most desirable of the Veloce Spider variants employing the more modern 101 series underpinnings while retaining the highly desirable 750 series short wheel base chassis with the small tail lights and no wing windows. It has a correct date range engine number, very likely original to this chassis. Currently fitted is a rebuilt 5 speed transmission, with the rare “tunnel case” original 4-speed included. Thanks to its long-time dry climate ownership, this Veloce boasts an ultra solid and dry undercarriage. In recent years the car has been restored. In addition to paint, chrome, upholstery and a new canvas top, the restorative works included an engine rebuild, among other mechanical items. The fully detailed engine bay is still equipped with difficult to replace cast aluminum airbox mounted to correct (and often missing) 40DC3 Weber carburetors. Also in place are the factory gauges, freshly restored Nardi wood rimmed steering wheel, and factory switchgear. Retained are the original drum brakes and steel wheels shod with period correct Michelin tires. Operational trunk lock! Much recent work complete by Bay Area Alfa experts Glenn Olivera and Jaan Hjorth. In short, this is a wonderfully restored, strong running and driving Bay Area Veloce Spider, employing a beautifully detailed cosmetic presentation while retaining nearly all of its original equipment.
