Built in the fall of 1959, this Abarth Double Bubble Zagato is a fine example of an adorable Italian small bore GT car. These cars carved out their niche in history by beating the larger and more powerful GT cars from England and the US in notable long distance events such as the 12 Hours of Sebring and the Tour de France.
This particular example was found in San Francisco in 1987, lingering in a state of disrepair. A full ground up restoration was performed between 1988 and 1993 by the current owner. The car was restored with historic racing in mind, and at this time the original motor was set aside and a more competitive 850cc motor was bored out to 903cc and installed. The car comes with a comprehensive spares package including the original and matching 750cc which is disassembled, a second rebuilt 903cc motor, a spare Fiat 600D engine, the original bumpers, wheels, hub cabs, and countless other components. All the documentation relating to the restoration is included in the sale.
The current owner has enjoyed much success racing the car in historic races in California over the last few years. Currently the car needs nothing mechanically, and is ready to be enjoyed. A period correct rally package has been added to improve drivability in tours.
Eligible for historic racing with CSRG, General Racing, and HMSA, or vintage rallies around the globe, this is a truly universal car. With comparable cars such as the Moretti 750 GS and Alfa SZ fetching well over $100,000, this car represents extremely good value in todays marketplace.
