The ultimate development of the Jaguar’s legendary XK series, the XK150 represents significant advancements over the earlier cars. They remain one of the 1950s’ most iconic motor cars, and they embody the flash and grace of the 1950s, as well as Jaguar’s usual mechanical sophistication, including the lovely twin cam XK inline-6. Compared to earlier cars, the XK150 has several technological advances over the 120 and 140 including power assisted disc brakes whose use Jaguar had pioneered at Le Mans, and a bigger cockpit area which accommodates larger drivers more comfortably. As ever, the XK150 was available as a more elemental roadster, the more completely equipped Drophead, and as a fixed head coupe. In 1959, the top spec was the S model, produced in extremely limited numbers and differentiated by the use of the high compression engine with straightened cylinder head ports coupled with triple 2 inch SU carburetors, a configuration quoted to produce 250hp by Jaguar. The car also featured stronger connecting rod bearings and clutch, dual SU fuel pumps, and lightened flywheel. In all, just 888 3.4 liter XK150S Roadsters were built, making this a very rare car.
This particular car is a matching-numbers example that was comprehensively restored in 2010-2011. It was completely stripped down to the frame, which was itself sand blasted and powder coated, along with the suspension components. The body was stripped to bare metal and repainted by Chad Martin and a new interior fitted by George Camp, a nationally-recognized Jaguar restorer in Columbia, South Carolina. The mechanical systems of the car were also renewed, including rebuilds of the engine, transmission, and differential. New tires were fitted, and the electrical, fueling, and cooling systems were also restored, including new wiring harness. The restoration totaled over $125,000 and in October of 2013, the car scored 99.02 in the JCNA regional Capitol City Classic Concours d’Elegance, a testament to the quality and thoroughness of the restoration. In April of 2014, the car had a further $6,704.06 in sorting work, including new master cylinder, fresh fluids (engine, gearbox, and differential oil, brake fluid, and coolant), suspension set up, set up automatic choke system, compression check (145-160 pounds on all cylinders), tune carburetors, set up ignition, repair fuel gauge, and new motor mounts.
This particular car is in excellent condition. The paintwork was executed to high standards and the body is both solid and straight. The gaps and panel fit are very good. The chrome is in nice condition overall, with some surface scratches and some thinning to the finish on the headlamp rings. The bumpers are excellent. The glass and lights are excellent, and the general impression the car makes is of a fresh and high quality example.
The interior reinforces that impression, with excellent dark blue leather and high quality wool carpets, both of which were installed to high standards. The dashboard was correctly restored to high standards, with excellent switches, controls and correct grey instrument panel. The steering wheel is excellent as well, as is the top.
The engine compartment was beautifully restored and is extremely clean. Aside from some flaking paint on the exhaust manifolds, a common problem that affects XK motors, the engine and engine bay are in as-new condition, and virtually show-ready. The triple carburetors are unique to the S model and visually impactful, as is the correct pumpkin colored cylinder head. The trunk was thoroughly and correctly restored in matching dark blue vinyl. The car is complete with books, tools, and jack.
The car drives very well overall. The engine runs well when warm, with some hesitation present when cold. The engine sounds good and makes good power. The brakes are effective and confidence-inspiring, and the chassis and suspension are tight, giving the car a sporting and sure-footed feel. The gearbox also works well.
This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a genuine XK150S Roadster with matching numbers and with factory overdrive. Recently restored to award-winning standards, this car is an excellent example of one of the rarest and most desirable variants of the Jaguar XK line. It has benefitted from recent mechanical sorting and is complete with jack, books, and tools.
