Description
1959 Stanguellini Formula Junior
s/n CS00160, engine no. 063589
Yellow with Blue Stripe
Commonly referred to as the car which introduced the Formula Junior specification to the world, the Stanguellini was the premier front engine small bore formula car weapon during the late 1950s, both in the USA and in Europe. Driven by such masters as von Trips, Ginther, Bandini, and tested by Fangio at Modena, The Stanguellini make captured both European and International title in 1958 and 1959. Approximately 150 Stanguellini Formula Juniors were built between 1958 and 1960.
This example, s/n CS00160, is fresh out of a ground up restoration, and will likely provide an outstanding vintage racing experience for the new owner. This example was delivered new to the USA and was believed to have been club raced in SCCA in-period. It is difficult to say exactly what races it participated in and how it placed in those races as detailed records keeping or the tracking of serial numbers was simply not standard practice during this time.
The restoration included completely restoring the chassis, disassembling the motor and transmission for thorough inspection, repainting the body, reupholstering the seat and forming new interior aluminum shrouds, replacing the steering wheel, gauges, wire wheels, and mounting new tires, and rebuilding the brakes and suspension with all new components where applicable. The carburetors were rebuilt, along with the cooling system. New fuel lines and a new fuel cell have been fitted. The craftsmanship is extremely well done and as correct to original as was possible. Detailed records for all the work done come with the car. Virtually all the work was completed during 2007 and the car remains fresh, having not been raced since.
Although the exact history of each of these cars is difficult to place, this car was believed to have been delivered to the US when new. In 1992 this car was for sale in Pennsylvania, when it was sold to John Rogers, and then to Randy Peterson who kept the car at Sears Point Raceway until Fantasy Junction sold this example to the current owner in late 2005.
Wonderfully fresh and eligible for historic racing with General Racing (Monterey Historics and Wine Country Classic), Classic Sports Racing Group, HSR, VARA, and SCCA vintage here in the US, as well as numerous other venues in Central and South America, New Zealand, Australia, and possibly Europe (where the front engine Formula Junior class is extremely active), this Stanguellini is sure to represent excellent value to the racing minded buyer who doesn`t want to spend fortune restoring his new mount.
