Alfa Romeo, the Italian giant of automobile manufacturing has long been associated with great racing and road cars. When the Giulia and Giulietta were released, these sporty cars delivered on the promise of performance and racing potential. Strong sales in Europe and America resulted in racing variants on several continents. Racers from all over the world campaigned both private and sponsored cars in period events. Today this rich tradition continues with competitive vintage racing and touring events throughout the world. The robust technical support offered from clubs, readily available parts, and affordable racing equipment, continually validates the Giulietta as one of the top cars selected, particularly for racing enthusiasts starting out in the racing scene.
This particular car is a nicely prepared racecar formerly involved in vintage racing in CSRG (Classic Sports Racing Group) for about fifteen years. The car was purchased in 2005 from Grass Valley CSRG member Rick Barris who used the car in several CSRG events. The current owner purchased the car when it was running a 1600 motor, but when that motor gave up, CSRG requested the car be returned to its original 1300cc configuration. The owner began with a Normale 1300 block, completing the rebuild using Veloce cams, pistons, dual Weber carburetors, and a baffled oil pan. The motor proved quite capable when completed, not a full-blown race motor, but rather a hot street motor with excellent response, streetability, and durability. As part of the build, the car was further fitted with an electric fuel pump, Tilton flywheel, a TZ clutch, and a five-speed transmission (which has run one season since being freshened). The suspension features Koni adjustable shots and Dave Rue medium stiffness competition springs. The rear end is a stock open 4.56, but a low ratio, allowing for spirited high-revving performance. The car is also fitted with a roll bar, racing seat, and racing seat belts (which will require rewebbing based on the dates).
Nicely prepared and ready for action, this Alfa Romeo has been tastefully lightened with the bumpers and select trim removed, giving the car a purposeful racing presence. Cosmetically, this car displays good racecar cosmetics, a solid and straight body, and a great stance. The paint is appropriate for racecar use, with some light fading and evidence of track use, including some chips, surface imperfections, and a hand-sized indentation at the forward portion of the drivers front fender. Various trim and brightwork on the car is good overall with the grille surround and side vent trim removed, resulting in a clean look, accenting the front of the car. The painted steel wheels show evidence of mild use in the paint, shod with Hoosier tires with good tread remaining. The windshield was removed and replaced with a nice short Plexiglas windscreen mounted to an aluminum base, saving weight and adding to the racing appearance of the car. Side glass and window frames were removed, further lightening the car and improving power to weight ratio. The black full width roll bar finishes off the purposeful appearance. The overall look of the car is clean, simple, and business-like. Exactly what you want in a racecar.
The interior is a nice combination of original features and racing components. The original dashboard is in place with all three original instruments centrally located behind a stitched leather wrapped steering wheel. The interior includes a single black racing seat with matching door panels and dash top padding. Here again the vintage Alfa ribbed rubber floor mats, contrasting fire extinguisher, competition seat belts, and safety cut-off switch all blend with vintage flavor adding to the purposeful agenda of this race-ready Alfa Spider.
Under the hood, Alfa Romeo aluminum castings, Weber carburetors, and internal upgrades come together in a nicely set-up performance package, nestled in a tidy engine compartment. The presentation is generally vintage and period-appropriate in feel and includes well-executed upgrades including a custom made air box feeding the twin Weber carbs. The trunk area is clean and solid as is the undercarriage, which shows no evidence of significant damage and correct components.
This car has a surprisingly accessible and tractable character. The entry, seating, and starting procedure are straightforward and the easily, revving up to a raspy, tone through the Autodelta style side exhaust. Slipping the car in gear, the clutch responds promptly and relatively progressively. Shifting is smooth and direct as power comes on with the twin cam 1300 delivering full Italian sounds as you launch to speed. Cornering is sharp, having been dialed in with Koni shocks, slightly lowered stance, and Vintage T.D. Hoosier tires.
This is an ideal car for anyone seeking a capable entry-level eligible vintage race car that has been nicely prepared. It also represents strong value and as a street-registered and California titled car, also offers a particularly thrilling dual-purpose opportunity for the occasional Cars and Coffee or fair weather rally. This Alfa Romeo Spider is ready to deliver a rewarding driving experience on the racetrack or at vintage events. Built by racing professionals with an eye for competition and vintage flavor, this Giulietta is certain to excite racing enthusiasts who crave Italian performance, artistry, and vintage motoring.
